-- Parker: The 2023 Caracol dos Profetas Vinho do P. Santo Fazendas da Areia was produced with grapes from old vines of the obscure Caracol variety planted on a small plot of very sandy calcareous soils close to the sea. It fermented in small stainless steel vats and oak barrels and matured in well-seasoned 228-liter French oak barrels for 11 months. It has a deeper golden color than their regular Caracol and a deeper nose, with nuttier notes, spicier and with a smoky and salty twist. It's complex and nuanced, intriguing, even more reminiscent of an unfortified Palomino from the Sherry region in Spain, sultry and mineral. It has a medium-bodied palate with contained ripeness, 12.3% alcohol, very good freshness and acidity (pH 3.24 and 6.38 grams of acidity), coming through as balanced and clean, tasty, very long and with a chalky and dry texture and a salty and bitter twist in the finish. 2,974 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2024.
