Lobenberg: Ganz am Rande der Appellation gelegene Weinberge und der Nachbar von Château Tertre de la Mouleyre. Der Besitzer ist Jean-Luc Thunevin, ein ehemals berühmter Garagenwinzer, der inzwischen zu den großen Negociants des rechten Ufers gehört. 2017 gab es bei Valandraud keine Frostverluste. 90% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc. Unheimlich reichhaltige Nase. Schon 2016 war ein totaler Highflyer und 2017 ist von der Aromatik im Duft nicht schlechter. Diese Nase tänzelt so unglaublich fein. Der Mund bestätigt diese reife Pflaumenfrucht. Das ist schon erstaunlich. Schwarze und rote Pflaume in hoher Intensität. Ganz wenig Kirsche dazu. Sauerkirsche, schwarze Kirsche, aber gar nicht fett. Keine fette Lakritze, keine Veilchen, sondern eher ein bisschen Flieder, Orange und Mango. Tänzelnd. Die Region am Ende von Saint-Emilion in Richtung Castillon hat es 2017 ganz überragend getroffen. Ich bin schon gespannt auf den Tertre de la Mouleyre seinen winzigen, mit Nagelscheren bearbeiteten, biodynamischen Nachbarn. Sehr lang im Mund mit schöner Frische. Aber selten habe ich Weine in nur eine Fruchtrichtung wie hier Pflaume/Kirsche laufen sehen. Das gefällt mir sehr gut, ist unikathaft. 97-98/100

-- Galloni: One of the stars of the vintage, the 2017 Valandraud has turned out even better than I expected. It was magnificent in two separate tastings. Deep and sumptuous, the 2017 possesses off-the-charts intensity and power. Dark red cherry, red plum, chocolate, licorice and spice build as this explosive wine shows off its personality. There are only a few wines in 2017 that are truly exciting and viscerally thrilling. Valandraud is one of them. Don't miss it! 98/100

-- Jeb Dunnuck: A blend of 90% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon brought up in new barrels, the 2017 Chateau Valandraud is up with the creme de la creme of the vintage. Killer notes of creme de cassis, graphite, white flowers, and violets all emerge from the glass, and this beauty has a wonderful sense of purity, full-bodied richness, ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. It opens up beautifully with time in the glass and is a remarkable effort in the vintage. Give it 3-4 years if you can and enjoy any time over the following two decades. 97/100

-- Suckling: Intense, ripe dark plums and berries with graphite and stones, as well as fresh, cedary oak. This has powerful yet very seamless and intense fruit presence with a very concentrated array of ripe dark plums and rich, assertive fruit, which builds smoothly on the finish. Impressive poise here. A blend of 90% merlot, 7% cabernet franc and 3% cabernet sauvignon. Try from 2025. 96/100

-- Wine Enthusiast: Bold tannins and rich fruit combine to give this wine a dense structure, yet with a great sense of freshness. Black currants and a firm tannic backdrop promise excellent aging potential. It's impressively structured and should be held until 2025. 95-97/100

-- Gerstl: Dass der schon im Duft extrem konzentriert daherkommt überrascht nicht, ein immenses Fruchtbündel, begleitet von schöner Terroitriefe. Wie gewohnt ein kleines Monster am Gaumen, aber wie in den letzten Jahren eigentlich immer, findet er auch dieses Jahr seine Harmonie, diese Kraftpaket kommt erstaunlich leichtfüssig daher, die Tannine sind fein und auch in Sachen frische Frucht und Extrakssüsse findet er seine Harmonie, das ist nicht mein persönlicher Liebling, aber qualitativ ist das grosse Klasse. 19+/20
