Valdeorras As Caborcas
-- Parker: Rodriguez produced a single-vineyard wine for the first time in 2010. The 2010 As Caborcas Mencia carries the name of a northeast facing 2.5-hectare vineyard at 550 meters above sea level, where the fruit is sourced. The vines are 50 to 70 years old grown on granite soil on the banks of the river Bibei and have the mix of old varieties, Mencia, Souson, Garnacha, Merenzao, Godello and Brancellao. The wine is aged for 12 months in 2,000-liter French oak foudres and was bottled in February 2012. It shows a very light red color. The nose is dominated by red fruit aromas, redolent of sour cherries, licorice, with a hint of blood oranges and the complexity and wild aroma of old co-planted grape varieties. The palate is fluid, with a touch of rusticity, persistence, great length, and fresh acidity. They achieved 12.5% alcohol in a cold vintage in a cold part of the appellation. This is very balanced juice from old vines, completely different to any other red from Valdeorras and a great wine. Bravo! 2,000 bottles produced. 94/100
