Lobenberg: Galatrona ist der Diamant in der Krone des Weinguts Petrolo und wird seit 1994 gemacht. Der reine Merlot kommt aus einer kühlen, von Wald umgebenen Höhenlage. Auf einem schmalen Streifen gibt es hier die magische Kombi aus Lehmboden und Gallestro Steinen. Die Reben stammen zum Teil vom befreundeten Castello di Ama und das nötige Know-How hat Luca Sanjust im Bordeaux von Jacques Thienpont (VCC) und Denis Durantou (L'Eglise-Clinet) direkt im Pomerol erlangen können. Reiner Bioanbau. Der Wein wurde 20 Monate lang in französischem Holz ausgebaut, hauptsächlich in Barriques, circa 25 Prozent davon neu, aber auch ein paar größere Fässer fließen ein. Saftige, dunkle Beeren, Kirschen und Pflaumen spielen mit komplexen, erdig-würzigen Aromen. Lakritz, Teer, Leder, grüner Tabak, ein Hauch Vanille, Lorbeer und Muskatnuss vom Holzausbau. Duftige Minze und getrocknetes Heu sind fein verwoben – schon an der Nase verlockend samtig. Im Mund kommt die geballte, dichte Power. Intensiv strukturiert und dennoch sind die Tannine puderzucker fein und rund poliert. Die dunkle Beeren und Kirsch-Frucht ist reif, aber dabei zugleich saftig frisch. Die überragende Balance dieses Weins ist verblüffend und er zählt neben dem grandiosen L’Apparita des Castello di Ama zu den größten Merlots Italiens. 98/100

Falstaff über: Galatrona

-- Falstaff: Dunkelleuchtendes Rubinrot. Edle würzige Nase, nach schwarzen Johannisbeeren, feinen erdigen Noten, dazu ein Hauch getrocknetes Rosenblatt, Zigarrenkiste. Am Gaumen mit süßem Schmelz, umwoben von herzhaftem, saftigem Tannin, elegant im Verlauf, kommt im Finale lange und saftig wieder, im Ausklang auf feinen würzigen Tönen, noch etwas jung. 100/100

-- Suckling: The aromas here are very distinct with dried flowers such as lavender and violets. Some sage as well. Black berries and black olive skin. Full-bodied yet linear and energetic with very fine tannins and fantastic length. Fresh and lively in the finish. Merlot. Best after 2026. 98/100

-- Galloni: The 2021 Galatrona is a fine follow-up to the 2020. In most vintages, Galatrona is very showy right out of the gate. That is not at all the case with the 2021, a wine that is going to need a number of years to be at its finest. Black cherry, plum, mocha, leather, licorice and incense infuse the 2021 with tremendous complexity. More than anything else, I admire a feeling of vertical, explosive energy that catapults the 2021 into the stratosphere. This is a tremendous wine by any measure. 98/100

-- Colin Hay: This is a little closed aromatically and feels rather restrained and serious – almost a little moody. But it’s immediately quite ample on the attack and has great mineral intensity. The black cherry fruit is prominent but this is a wine that is not giving up many of its secrets at this stage – and one sense a greater complexity than is immediately evident. What is evident is the freshness of this, right from the lovely plunge-pool cool svelteness of the attack. This is rich, lithe and layered and, as it start to open in the mouth, it dances. There’s still a lot more to come here. For now this remains a little firm, closed, almost austere – but magisterial all the same. Sapid, juicy, fresh, bright and really sharp and clean on the long tapering finish, with a touch of green peppercorn adding to the sense of freshness. Very promising and quite possibly the best vintage yet made of this wine. 97+/100

-- Parker: The 2021 Val d'Arno di Sopra Galatrona shows extremely focused aromas, but very generous ones all the while, with soft mint, cherry and stracciatella over a full-bodied texture with soft layers of spice and cedarwood. The wine boasts an elegantly chalky quality to the tannins, but the mouthfeel is so generous, everything irons out beautifully over the palate. It ages in a combination of new and used barrique. Annual production is about 30,000 bottles. 97+/100
