Lobenberg: »High Hopes« ist ein Blend, der auf Syrah von Schiefer Böden aus dem Swartland basiert. Die Region ist heute mit Sicherheit eine der interessantesten und nachgefragtesten Südafrikas. Angefangen hat der Trend in der Region, nordwestlich von Kapstadt, mit den nun schon ikonischen Winzern Eben Sadie und Adi Badenhorst. 30 Prozent der Syrah Trauben für »High Hopes« wurden als Ganztrauben, das heißt mitsamt ihrer Stiele vergoren. Anschließend wurde der Syrah in 500 Liter Eichentonneaux ausgebaut. Die Grenache und Cinsault wurden hingegen entrappt und im Barrique vergoren. Nach zehn Monaten Holzausbau wurde dann der Blend zusammengefügt. Mittleres, klares rubinrot im Glas mit violetten Reflexen. An der Nase ein eher dunkles Profil mit verlockender Würze. Pflaume und frische, reife Schwarzkirsche. Mediterrane Kräuter wie Thymian und Lorbeer leiten auf frisches Fleisch und ein Hauch Vanille über. Ganz dezent kommt Oliventapenade und die rauchige Granitmineralität durch. Da geht schon enorm viel ab im Glas! Im Mund hat der Wein einen animierenden, feinen Gripp. Bitterschokolade, Blaubeere und wieder satte schwarze Kirsche und Brombeere. Super Druck und dennoch so erfreulich Frisch mit Noten von Lavendel und hellem Lakritz, die sich um die ultrafeinen Tannine legen. Das ist schon echt aufregender Stoff, und in seiner Preisklasse absolut überragend! 95/100

Tim Atkin über: High Hopes Syrah

-- Tim Atkin: The Syrah berries from this Swartland vineyard are 'so small they would fit in a matchbox' according to Lukas van Loggerenberg, yet there's no sense of over-concentration. Blended with 10% Grenache and 4% Cinsault from different sites, it's a mini Columella, showing flavours of plum, cranberry and red cherry, subtle wood and aromas of fynbos and white pepper. 2023-30. 93/100

Galloni über: High Hopes Syrah

-- Galloni: The 2021 High Hopes comes from a Syrah vineyard on schist soils (from which Donovan Rall takes some fruit) and Loggerenberg's first blend. Raised in used barrels, it has quite a backward nose that demands some coaxing, dark berry fruit commingles with sage, white pepper and wild fennel. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins, perfectly judged acidity, cohesive and focused with gentle grip towards the finish. There is a slight ferrous element that lends complexity right at it end and on the aftertaste. Superb. 93/100

Jancis Robinson über: High Hopes Syrah

-- Jancis Robinson: Really, really fine for a Syrah. The tannins are like brushed velvet and cello tonewood, and while the nose is savoury, tobacco leaf and Moroccan leather, the palate has wild red-berry and roasted-tomato sweetness. Real density and flooded with juice on the mid palate with a very pretty violet sign off. 17,5/20

-- Weingut: In the vineyards:The Syrah is planted on schist soils in a low yielding vineyard which produced only 2,5 tons per Hectare in 2021 adding deeply concentrated flavours to the wine. The Grenache and Cinsaut components are planted on red soils which is rich in iron, these parcels give the final blend great perfume and elegance.In the cellar:The Syrah was 30% wholebunch fermented and aged in big 500 Litre barrels. The Grenache and Cinsaut was destemmed before fermentation and aged in small barrique. Due to the extremely low yields on all 3 vineyards, one pump over was done daily to capture the essence of the wines. The different components were blended after 10 months in oak. No enzymes or fining agents were used in the making of the wine.Label story:The hot air balloon symbolizes a new journey, reaching new heights and going to places never been before. The three leaves on the right showcase the number of cultivars in the blend. The school bag, athlete and fisherman all symbolize how we always have high hopes when we try something new or when we go out to achieve something great. Lukas is also a keen fisherman who always has high hopes when he goes out for the day with the hopes of catching dinner. In the background is Lukas’s face with a map of the Swartland with the wheat awn also symbolizing the origin of the wine as it is widely cultivated in the Swartland.
