Spätburgunder
-- Galloni: The 2021 Spätburgunder was harvested in two parcels of half a hectare each, in Oesticher Klosterberg and Hallgartener Schönhell, both on a band that once formed the shore of the Mainz Basin, with lighter, sandy soils, where 2006-planted French massal selections thrive. The fruit was hand-harvested and hand-destemmed to ensure intact grapes for an initial intra-cellular fermentation. Twenty percent whole bunches were added and fermented spontaneously for 18-20 days before pressing and aging in French pièce. The wine was racked off gross lees and stayed on fine less until bottling in March 2023. Just three barrels were made from 2021’s tiny yields. The nose is subtly smoky, still with a vestige of flinty reduction, giving way to red ripe cherry. The palate harbors white pepper on its slender, translucent, tender, bright and elegant body. The tannins are super fine, a picture of elegance, poise, slenderness and suppleness with a smoky, dark charcoal echo. Very honest, unforced, elegant. (Bone-dry) 92/100
