Lobenberg: Von kühleren Lagen im Nordwesten von Montalcino. Dieser Brunello wurde für zwei Jahre zu 80 Prozent im großen Holzfass von 20 bis 55 Hektoliter und in konischen 36-Hektoliter Fässern ausgebaut. Der Rest reift in gebrauchten Tonneaux. Das Ergebnis ist ein duftiger Hochlagen-Brunello voller Finesse und Eleganz. 2018 war hier auch insgesamt ein eleganter Finessejahrgang. In dem regenreichen und dennoch warmen Jahr war das Mikroklima in den Höhenlagen ein unglaublicher Vorteil. Filippo Chia ist überzeugt dass ein hands-off approach zu den besten Ergebnissen führt. Und dieser Brunello ist ein wunderbarer Beweis dafür, denn er wurde dadurch klar, elegant und fokussiert. Feine ätherische Aromen an der Nase leiten über auf gebackenen Ton und delikate Gewürze. Orangenschale, Salbei und getrocknete Kräuter mit einem Hauch Menthol und duftigem Tomatenblatt geben wunderbare Frische. Die reifen, fast süßen Erdbeeren und saftig rote Kirschen passen in sagenhafter Harmonie dazu. Das ist aber, auch wenn es sich vielleicht so anhört, kein rund polierter Wein, sondern ein richtiger Charakter-Brunello. Fein strukturierte Tannine und eine beeindruckende fast elektrisierende Säure, die einem das Wasser im Mund zusammenlaufen lässt, tänzelt auf der Zunge. Am Ende bleiben Lavendel und duftige frische Blumen. Beeindruckend und echt zum Reinlegen schön! 95/100

-- Jeb Dunnuck: Elegantly woven together, the 2018 Brunello Di Montalcino is herbaceous with compelling aromas of tarragon, red cherry preserve, medicinal herbs, saline, and dried rose petals. It displays graceful ease and arch through the palate, with its layers gently coaxing through a long finish. It is noted by red raspberry, sweet herbs, fresh orange, and softly textured stony earth, and it has refreshing acidity with a delicate throughline and ultra-fine tannins. This is an absolutely gorgeous and gracefully transparent expression to drink over the next 15-20 years. 95+/100

-- Galloni: Darkly alluring and dusty in style, the 2018 Brunello di Montalcino impresses with a blend of dried citrus peels, shavings of cedar, flowery undergrowth, black cherries and Tuscan dust. It’s soft-textured, buoyant even, with depths of velvety, textural red and blue fruits and sweet liquid inner violet tones that stain the palate. The 2018 finishes fresh and long with notions of wild blueberry and hints of balsamic spice, framed by a coating of fine tannin. Romitorio used all of their fruit that is usually reserved for the Riserva to bolster their Brunello in 2018. Production was also down by 15% due to a strict selection to eliminate moldy berries. That said, this is a total success for the vintage. 94/100

Suckling über: Brunello di Montalcino

-- Suckling: I like the dried violet undertones to the red and blue fruit, along with some walnut husk and olive. There’s so much flavor here, packed into a compact core framed by silky, firm tannins. Dense and focused. Try after 2024. 94/100

-- Parker: The Castello Romitorio 2018 Brunello di Montalcino shows crisp and tart fruit with cherry, cassis and wild plum. This mid-weight wine offers a lot of freshness and brightness in a vintage that posed challenges for many. This expression is unique thanks to the inner energy displayed here; the red fruit is front and center and the wine's balanced acidity seals the deal. It ages in oak for two years. Some 46,000 bottles were made. 94/100
