Challao
The top of the range is the eponymous red 2022 Challao, produced with a blend of 75% Tempranillo and the rest Garnacha, Mazuelo, Viura, Garnacha Blanca and some unknown varieties form a high-altitude vineyard planted in 1945 on shallow soils with marl and limestone, a cold place with a big influence from the winds coming from the mountains. It fermented in open-top concrete tanks with indigenous yeasts, controlling the extraction and aging it in a 2,000-liter oak foudre for 23 months. It has moderate ripeness, no more than 13% alcohol and a low pH of 3.35. It has a completely different nose from its siblings, with a note of red meat and blood, an iron-like touch, smoky and spicy, expressive and open, with peachy fruit, complex and attractive a little à la Côte-Rôtie. It's fleshy and juicy, with abundant, very fine tannins and a chalky, long and dry finish. It has terrific balance and no sense of heat or ripeness at all, it feels like a wine from a cold vintage! This is one for the long haul. 2,211 bottles, 40 magnums and 10 double magnums produced. It was bottled in November 2024.
