Med en andel på 59% har vi lidt mere Merlot end Cabernet Franc (41%) i blandingen her. Mere leret terroir skrånende ned mod bjergskråningen end samme ejer Canon på kalksten. 14 % alkoholindhold. Den vil blive lagret i 16 til 18 måneder i 34 % nye barriques og amforaer. Vidunderlig udtryksfuld, meget klokkeagtig frugt i næsen. Røde ribs og mørke kirsebær veksler med lidt blomme, lakrids og et delikat Cabernet-krydderi. Mørkerød peber og chili kommer fra Cabernet Franc, men alt er helt modent, ingen hårdhed overhovedet. I baggrunden er der endda lidt citrusagtige, syrlige noter som kumquat. I smagen er der igen solbær, men uden at være grønne, plus røde æbler og syrlige kirsebær. Så elegant og totalt afbalanceret, utrolig delikat. Wow, smagt lige ved siden af den virkelig store Canon, genkender jeg bestemt paralleller her i den desværre noget mere rustikke stil. På en måde er det en lille Canon, men selvfølgelig ikke helt så poleret, mere rustik, uden denne ultrarene finesse, noget grovere med mere krydderi fra Cabernet'en. Ikke desto mindre en god længde med fint salt og kridtagtigt greb i eftersmagen. Meget elegant og masser af power! Hvis det ikke var for den nærliggende Canon fra samme ejendom ... kunne den få en højere karakter. *** Château Berliquet vinificeres og overvåges af Stéphane Derenoncourts team. Noget svingende i kvalitet, men kan være storslået i nogle år.

(St Emilion; 59% Merlot; 41% Cabernet Franc; a final yield of 45 hl/ha; pH 3.53; 14% alcohol; tasted first at the UGCB press tasting at the Cité du Vin and then at Canon – last wine tasted on a long day and it shone). The first vintage vinified in the new vat room, with 15 smaller vats replacing the 9 larger vats of the past. That helps explain the gain in precision here. We are now very close to Canon in qualitative terms. The character of the two terroirs are, however, very different (with the combination of plateau and côteaux here giving this an additional sense of vertical depth). Floral, aromatically just a little closed and intimate but one is immediately enticed. A gorgeous cedar builds with very little aeration. More gravitas, in fact, than Canon but with much the same fruit intensity. More earthy rather than chalky. The Cabernet Franc signature is so gentle and gracious. Beguiling. Violets. Irises. Lavender and rosemary. Supple and plump on the palate but quite delicate which allows the Cabernet Franc to really express itself. Glorious calcaire tannins gently sculpt this and release too that signature limestone salinity. Excellent in a very delicate and elegant way. Lovely cool harmony, with lots of menthol. Exciting. The best ever from here. Another coup de Coeur (this part of the alphabet in Saint Émilion seems incredibly strong this year!).

A brilliant, impeccably made Saint-Emilion, the 2023 Château Berliquet is based on 59% Merlot and 41% Cabernet Franc and aged 16-18 months in 40% new barrels with 15% in amphorae, the balance in neutral oak. I love the sense of class here, with black cherries, leafy tobacco, chocolate, and damp earth on the nose. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it's round, lush, and opulent, with nicely integrated spicy oak and outstanding overall balance. Notably, this is the first vintage produced in the estate's new winery, where additional tanks allowed for greater precision in the cellar, and I think it shows. Incredibly classic and impressive stuff, drink bottles over the coming 25+ years. Drink 2026-2051.

The Wine Palate om: Chateau Berliquet Grand Cru Classe

A blend of 59% Merlot and 41% Cabernet Franc, the 2023 Berliquet has a pH of 3.53 and was aged in 10% amphorae and 90% oak barriques, of which 34% were new. It has a deep garnet-purple color, prancing out of the glass with showy notes of black cherries, rose oil, anise, and sandalwood, plus hints of ripe blueberries and wood smoke. The medium-bodied palate is bright and energetic, with intense black berry layers and super-silky tannins, finishing with wonderful length and tension.

Confirming expectations from the en primeur tastings, the 2023 Berliquet is superb, revealing a complex, perfumed bouquet of lead pencil, black raspberries, violets and spices, accented by fresh licorice. Medium- to full-bodied, layered and textured, it is deep and seamless, built around a fleshy core of fruit and concluding with mineral, chalky tannins. A few years in the cellar will allow it to gain further harmony.

Flowers, black cherries, raspberries, vanilla, and spice fill the perfume. Silky, refined, and polished, there is a nice sense of purity to the fruits on the palate, and in the energetic, elegant and refreshing finish. This is already providing pleasure, but the best is yet to come if you can wait a few years. This is the first vintage produced in the new cellar, which expanded from 9 tanks to 24 vats, allowing for parcel by parcel vinification. You can taste and feel the difference here. The wine blends 59% Merlot, with 41% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2026-2048.

Berliquet ligger på plateauet i Saint Emilion og grænser op til Chateau Madelaine på den ene side og Ausone på den anden; det ville være svært at finde et bedre terroir i Saint Emilion....
