Heiner Lobenberg über:
Viariz La Muria 2023

Luis Gutierez, Parkers Mann für Spanien, fasst den Jahrgang 2023 anhand von Alvaro Palacios Weingütern ganz im Westen und ganz im Osten, somit Landesübergreifend so zusammen: 2023 was an even more generous crop than 2022 … the wines have better balance, and it doesn't feel like a warm year at all. In fact, the wines feel more like they come from a cool year. It's a vintage that has a tendency toward reduction, not as much as 2020, but still reductive. But it's an elegant, stony reduction...The quality of the 2023s is stunning. There is a level of precision, cleanliness, symmetry and elegance that, if the end of the élevage and the bottling goes as expected, I must conclude that 2023 might be the finest vintage ... There might be other individual wines that reach higher peaks, but as an overall portfolio, the vintage 2023 represents the strongest collection ever produced.

Parker über: Viariz La Muria

-- Parker: Putting my nose in the glass of the 2023 La Muria was like what happened when I smelled the 2021: my heart started beating at a faster pace. The wine has an exhilarating nose of wild berries, flowers and herbs, lifted and ethereal, developing hints of pomegranate and rockrose. The label reads 12.5% alcohol, but in reality, it's a little less, perhaps 12.1% or 12.2%, and it has very fine tannins and heart-stopping balance. They did a very strict selection of the grapes. The wine is super clean and precise, symmetric, kaleidoscopic, with an ethereal quality but with tons of energy and light. I think the hard work has paid off. The tannins are silky, super fine, and the finish is long, clean and very precise. There are 700 bottles of this. It was bottled in May 2025. This is a legend in the making.

Suckling über: Viariz La Muria

-- Suckling: This has a very aromatic nose of smoke, violets and red berries, with floral intensity and very precise fruit. The palate is tight and finely knit, with distinct charm and character. It is seamless and ethereal but compact. Very fine, silky tannins. This comes from the highest vineyard in the Bierzo (1,050 meters). Fermented with whole clusters and long maceration. A unique wine produced in very small quantities. This can be enjoyed now, but I’d love to see how it evolves.

Galloni über: Viariz La Muria

-- Galloni: The 2023 La Muria is a Mencía from the highest vineyard in the region, located in the Corullón range. It was harvested early and delivers a green-tinged profile with hop-like aromas, floral notes and generous freshness. A touch of underripe red fruit appears on the palate, which is tense and lightly grippy with a lingering herbal note. Long and flavorful, the 2023 gradually reveals additional layers of licorice and soy sauce, resulting in an expressive, distinctive wine.

Tim Atkin über: Viariz La Muria

-- Tim Atkin: Vineyards in Viariz – including the highest in the DO Bierzo with an altitude over 1,000m – provide the backdrop to this strikingly perfumed Mencía. It is a heady combination of wild flowers and rose petals with an immediately enticing note of stony reduction. Somehow it strikes a wonderful balance between precise red cherry fruit underpinned by direct acidity, and a certain fleshiness with subtle oak. It deserves time to fully express itself but the potential is huge. A wine that is at once unique and entirely Bierzo!
