Lacima 2020

Blended from old vine Mencía, Brancellao, Mouratón and Sousón, this red is fermented with indigenous yeast in open French oak and matured nearly two years in barrel. The wine is more red-fruited than the 2021 vintage – also in this list – with a plush yet structured palate. It offers a steely drive with a touch of chocolate on the finish…very morish!

The 2020 LaCima is 85% Mencía with other red varieties from Ribeira Sacra. This was sourced from the highest vineyards at 500 to 700 meters in elevation. It presents delicate red fruit aromas with hints of herbs, mint, pomegranate and a touch of black fruit. There’s an appealing concentration that defines the plush palate, with light richness and vivid flavor. This is long and gently grippy. The 2020 is a modern style that captures the area’s riper side with a talc-like texture.

Selection of different plots from Bibei Valley. Vines from 60 to 100 years old. Located on unique spots like Valderodrigo, Requián, Mendoia, Sobrado, San Vicenzo and A Ribeira. Sandy loam soil with some differences between each spot in terms of sand and clay. Our soils are plenty of schists from white and pink quartz and disintegrated slate besides of granite. Altitude between 300 and 700 meters. Training system is goblet. Planting density variable. Average of production per vine is 1.2 kg. Northwest and Southwest exposures. The blend is composed mainly by Mencia (72%) and Mouratón (14%), the rest is shared out between Brancellao (9%), Alicante Bouschet and Sousón (5%). Warm year, irregular rainfalls. Vintage 2020 comes preceded by a warm autumn, plenty of precipitations during November and December of 2019, seemed to be a good omen to increase the water reserves, but winter was dry and warm, without hardly frost and rare snowfalls, as it is beginning to be common. Spring started with plentiful of precipitations which, accompanied by the average common temperatures did the budburst started in favorable conditions. May was very warm and with very low range of precipitations, which made vines drew in dood sanitary conditions and they got the maximum number of bunches possible. June was cold compared to May and very dry, what caused vines slow down the vegetative growing. It was in Julv when Summer appeared in his best, getting very warm weeks which helped the vines to get equilibrium. It was also very dry except for some storms that they did not damage the grapes at the Bibei Valley. August was a regular month and it stood out by the continental nature. We also got some storms and abundant rainfalls, which refreshed the soil just in the beginning of veraison. We started September with a very favorable conditions to the vintage time, the grapes had a good airing, health and equilibrated maturation. It is a great vintage despite the difficulties, wines are clearly defined, precise, nimble, fresh and complex. Lacima 2020 is greedy, seductive in volume and balanced richness, everything well merged in a wine with a long finish. Hand picking in 10kg cases. Grapes were picked between the September 8th and October 2nd. Thorough sorting, first one in the vineyard and the second one grape by grape in the cellar. 100% destemmed bunches, prefermentative cold maceration. Must ferment slowly in 5OO litters open barrels and 2000 liters French oak wooden tanks with frequent bunch downs belleving in the wild yeast that comes from each plot. When fermentation finish, the wine is cooled down to stop malolactic fermentation which will be made spontaneously 300 liters French oak barrels. 24 months in French oak barrels from two to four uses. After that aging wines rest in 15 HI foudres, before bottling. Natural stabilization with the cold of the winter. It could find some solid residues.

Dominio do Bibei

Trotzdem...
