Biserno 2022

Bag Tenuta di Biserno står ingen ringere end Lodovico Antinori.

The Tenuta di Biserno 2022 Biserno, a dark and rich blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, reveals layered aromas of dark fruit, sweet spice and campfire ember. A bright note of candied orange adds multidimensionality and a touch of extra sweetness, lifting the overall profile. Fermented in steel and aged for 15 months in mostly new French barriques, the wine reflects a hot vintage yet avoids feeling weighed down, finishing with soft, sweet tannins and a polished texture.

Suckling om: Biserno

Intensity and elegance dominate in this wine. The nose shows aromatic herbs, eucalyptus, bramble fruit and sweet spices. Full-bodied, it has firm, velvety tannins, refreshing acidity, a slightly chalky finish and a long, savory aftertaste. Drinkable now, but best in two or three years.

Decanter om: Biserno

The Biserno project marked the reunion of Antinori brothers, Lodovico and Piero – together with their nephew, Niccolò Marzichi Lenzi – when it was founded in 2001. Situated in Bibbona on the Tuscan coast, it consists of equal parts Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with a dash of Petit Verdot. The 2022 is deep and rich, with concentrated hedgerow berry aromas allied to grilled and fresh herb scents. In the mouth it showcases the vintage's compact nature and density of fruit, with an elevated menthol character which sweeps in with a wave of freshness and carries the wine on its coat tails. Very refined, silky tannins and high acidity, along with some lovely floral top-notes make this a well balanced and aromatically seductive wine. Best after several years in bottle.

Colin Hay om: Biserno

(IGT Toscana; sourced from a terroir of clay and Bolgheri conglomerate; composed of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Petit Verdot; pH 3.73; 14.5% alcohol; released first in March but still available). Finer, more subtle, refined and elegant, more poised and delicate in a way than the richer, spicier, more punchy and more direct Il Pino. This is gracious, harmonious and relaxed and its exudes class but in a disguised and yet confident way. As I noted when I tasted this last, this has much of the succulence of a fine warm-vintage St Emilion. I love the rose petal and fresh herbal notes that accompany the dark berry fruits here – with Cabernet Franc the star of the show, but each varietal playing its role. This feels more ample on the attack than it actually is and that tauter frame gives this an again disguised puissance that is impressive and even a little surprising. There are considerable tannins here, though very finely-grained, that will guarantee a long life.

Galloni om: Biserno

The 2022 Biserno is soft, vibrant and inviting. Silky contours and supple fruit lend tons of immediacy. Plum, pomegranate, blood orange and menthol are nicely amplified in the glass. The 2022 signals a transition towards a more restrained style than in the past, something that is hard to fully see in a vintage marked by late-season rain but that is nevertheless quite evident. Hints of spice linger on the exceptionally finessed finish.
