I Europa var "gemischer Satz" længe ildeset; det var kun østrigerne og spanierne, der anerkendte den store klasse af disse druesorter, der blev høstet og gæret sammen fra forskellige modningsstadier. Ofte i proportioner som en "hel klase". Det giver vinen en ekstra syrlig smag og spænding. Vild, krydret sort Carignan finpudses af jordbær-hindbær Grenache og fylde og varme fra Mourvedre. Chile er langt, langt væk fra den lidt kedelige mainstream i Señas og Almavivas.

The 2022 Garnacha-Cariñena-Monastrell The Ploughmen Sauzal Vineyard from Empedrado, Maule Valley, is complex. The nose offers red cherry and sour cherry alongside mint and a faint sanguine edge. Dry on the palate, it has tight tannins, jaw-gripping acidity and a slightly juicy core built around assertive tannins. Long and layered, it stands out as a distinctive Chilean red.

The 2022 The Ploughmen Carignan Field Blend originates from the Sauzal Vineyard and features a slightly higher proportion of Cariñena. Its personality is quite reflective of the standard Sauzal bottling, albeit with what I perceive to be a slightly higher-toned profile that, at least in this tasting, underscored the wine's floral register with a touch more intensity. The mouthfeel is broad, silken and wonderfully refined, energized by the site's signature mouthwatering acidity and mineral undercurrent. It culminates in a lively, high-toned finish with a slightly more direct quality than the comparatively ethereal standard bottling.
