Heiner Lobenberg über:
Valdepoleo Tempranillo 2020

-- Galloni: Built on teh trend of showcasing specific sites in Rioja wines, the 202 Valdepoleo is 100% Tempranillo from the Valdepoleo vineyard in Laguardia, Rioja Alvesa. Aged for 12 month in French oak barrels, this light-garnet-hued red wine enchants with its bouquet of dried flowers and cherries, accompanied by hints of chamomile and garrigue. Dry and moderately lean on the palate , the chalky texture and balanced high acidity contribute to a nimble, ethereal mouthfeel. It's a delicate and nuanced wine from Sonsierra, crafted in a carefully reductive style.

Parker über: Valdepoleo Tempranillo

-- Parker: Next to the 2019, I also tasted the 2020 Finca Valdepoleo, which was a full 1.5% lower in alcohol at 14% and also has a lower pH and higher acidity (3.55 and 6.03 respectively), which references a fresher wine with contained ripeness. He harvested a little earlier and used some full clusters; there's less new oak here (there's none, in fact, but he used some new oak in 2019 because the wine was more powerful); and the wine is more harmonious, powerful but keeping the freshness and balance. Power with elegance and potential to age. 68,000 bottles were filled after one year in barrel.

Suckling über: Valdepoleo Tempranillo

-- Suckling: Dusty spices, berries of mixed colors and a hint of crushed stones, pepper spices and grilled herbs. Juicy and tight on the palate with a medium to full body, full of firm, nicely chewy tannins that tightly wrap the fruit in a tangy, fruit-oriented finish. Pure and pretty lengthy finish. Drinkable now, but better in a year or two.

Tim Atkin über: Valdepoleo Tempranillo

-- Tim Atkin: Valdepoleo comes from the 17-hectare vineyard of the same name in Laguardia, planted at 630 metres in 1973. Dense and focused, it's a wine that screams limestone on the nose and palate. Structured and grippy, with sinewy tannin, lots of damson and black cherry fruit, nuanced older oak and a chiselled finish. 2025-32

Verkostungsnotiz

Weingut über: Valdepoleo Tempranillo

-- Weingut: Finca Valdepoleo is one of the most emblematic vineyards of Bodegas y Viñedos Pujanza. The wine it produces is a clear example of the nature of the area in which it is located, but given a personal touch by Carlos San Pedro. From this dual character comes a fresh, vibrant, very subtle wine which is in total harmony. It comes from a vineyard divided into seven plots which are worked separately from the harvest to the end of cask ageing. This is the moment when, through blind tasting, the decision is made on what percentage of wine from each plot will go into the final coupage. Hence its complexity. This is one of Pujanza’s most emblematic vineyards. A vineyard where each year the plots are precisely worked and divided following the criteria of the terrain. With the 2011 vintage the moment arrived to launch its own wine, with name to match: Valdepoleo, a wine with limited production, which we want to make unique and unforgettable with each new vintage. Valdepoleo occupies a surface area of 17.5 has and its average altitude is 630 m. The soil is clay-lime. Spontaneous fermentation tooks place in small stainless steel vats, separated by soil type. Malolactic fermentation was conducted in the same vats. Ageing a minimum of 12 months in 225 L. French oak barrels. Black-cherry colour, clear and bright. Attractive and suggestive. Intense, warm aromas, basically of red-berry fruit with subtle notes of black fruit, reminders of scented blossom and tertiary nuances. Fresh and complex. Delicate with a very round attack. It is a harmonious, complex wine with body and backbone, polished tannins and no sharp edges. Very well-balanced.
