Genau dieser Wein begründete den verdienten Ruhm von Rodrigo Mendez. Wie der As Sortes von Rafael Palacios für 'best of Valdeorras' steht, so ist das hier der geniale Vorzeige-Albarino Galiziens. Die moderne Version aber, die Klassik gibts auf gleichem Level bei Zarate. Dieser Genoveva ist so ungeheuer saftig und fruchtbetont, genialer Schmelz dazu, tolle Konzentration. Pikanz aus derm Fruchtstrauß von weißewm und gelben Kernobst, Zitrusfrüchten, Zesten, dazu purer Granit und viel Salz. Das Holz stützt, aber es dominiert nie, dazu hat der Wein auch eine zu geniale Frische und pikanten Fruchtdruck. Überwältigend in der Intensität der komplex mineralischen Geschmackseindrücke. Rodrigo ist für Rias Baixas styistisch so etwas wie Roulot in Meursault oder Schäfer Fröhlich an der Nahe. Puristisch und doch immer auch ein Intensivtäter mit Hang zur Moderne. Traumhafter Stoff und wie der angesprochene Godello aus Valdeorras möchte man diesen Wein gern oft im Glas haben, das ist archetypisch im modernen Stil. DER Wein für die Insel, Zusammen mit Rafael As Sortes DER 'every day' Weißwein, wenn man sich das leisten kann.

2023 war sehr warm, aber er ist deutlich kühler und balancierter als der noch heißere und trockenere 2022. Nicht so aufregend und extrem wie 2021, eher eine reife und harmonische Version von 2020. Und so ist 2023 durchaus eine Fortsetzung der so großen Jahrgänge seit 2019. Luis Gutierez, Parkers Mann für Spanien, fasst den Jahrgang 2023 anhand von Alvaro Palacios Weingütern ganz im Westen und ganz im Osten, somit Landesübergreifend so zusammen: 2023 was an even more generous crop than 2022 … the wines have better balance, and it doesn't feel like a warm year at all. In fact, the wines feel more like they come from a cool year. It's a vintage that has a tendency toward reduction, not as much as 2020, but still reductive. But it's an elegant, stony reduction...The quality of the 2023s is stunning. There is a level of precision, cleanliness, symmetry and elegance that, if the end of the élevage and the bottling goes as expected, I must conclude that 2023 might be the finest vintage ... There might be other individual wines that reach higher peaks, but as an overall portfolio, the vintage 2023 represents the strongest collection ever produced.

The 2023 Leirana Finca Genoveva deserves the best treatment: a wide Burgundy glass and plenty of time and patience. This is a very serious white that transcends variety and vintage, from a very special place, a centenary vineyard that transmits the strict and serious character of the granite soils like few others. The wine fermented and matured in well-seasoned, neutral 2,500-liter oak foudres with the lees untouched for one year. This is always closed, ungiving and austere at first and when young, but it's also precise, symmetric and full of energy rather than weight. It has very balanced parameters: 12.55% alcohol, a pH of 3.29 and 7.14 grams of acidity. 5,000 bottles were filled in September 2024.

A stony nose with citrus elements and an iodine, sealike note. Mineral and textural at first, this dissolves rapidly across the palate, revealing contained ripeness and subtle evolution. Incisive and finely structured, it carries the fruit with balance and composure. Penetrating and precise, a wine of captivating austerity that will evolve in the bottle. From a single 200-year-old vineyard planted on decomposed granite. Aged 12 months in large foudres. No malolactic fermentation. Better in 2026

Leirana Genovena is made with what Rodri Méndez calls the 'primitive clone of Albariño', which has much smaller bunches than many of the more recent selections. Sourced from a 2.5-hectare vineyard in Valiñas, a part of which is over 200 years' old, this is a subtly wooded, wonderfully focused expression of granitic soils, with incredible energy, mouth-watering freshness and a palate of lemongrass, beeswax and wet stones.

The 2023 Albariño Leirana Genoveva from Salnés fermented in foudre. It delivers a polished expression, with notes of linden, soft honey, nutty undertones, flowers and a delicate balsamic touch. This is creamy in texture, with intensity and a clear, expressive profile. The 2023 is a delicious, complex white.
