Meget typisk, kalkholdig Saint-Émilion-næse, klart på den mørke, violette side til at begynde med. Blomme, brombær, sorte kirsebær og slåen samt et strejf af cassis. Denne frodige, livlige smag - masser af violer, næsten rosenblade - er intens og elegant på samme tid. Det tilstedeværende, men velintegrerede trækrydderi understøtter aromaerne uden at maskere dem. Kalkstenskrydderiet træder tydeligt frem og giver friskhed og præcision. I smagen har vinen en dejlig smag og en direkte kridtsaltet spænding. Frugten er kødfuld og mørk med saftige sorte kirsebær og blommer samt et strejf af kandiserede violer. Tanninerne er pulveragtige og fine og ligger jævnt hen over ganen. Chokoladeagtige noter opbygges og bliver mere og mere kakaoagtige i slutningen, båret af denne mineralske friskhed. God længde, harmonisk, samlet set med en dejlig kridtsaltet finish. En harmonisk Villemaurine, ikke helt stor, men stadig en meget god succes med et stort smagende gen.

2025 vil helt sikkert indtage sin plads blandt de bedste Bordeaux-årgange nogensinde – sammen med 2009, 2016 og 2022 – og er samtidig en af de mest afbalancerede og harmoniske årgange overhovedet. OG den er meget tidligt drikkeklar og charmerende. Sådan skal det være!

Sporting a dense purple hue, the 2025 Château Villemaurine reveals exotic red and blue fruits, chalky, liquid rock-like minerality, and graphite, with floral and liquid violet nuances. Coming from a brilliant terroir on the upper plateau, it's based on 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon that's still resting in 50% new barriques, 20% one-year-old barriques, and 30% foudre. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with a concentrated, focused mouthfeel, ripe, polished tannins, and a great finish. Harvest ran from September 10th through the 28th, and this hit 14% alcohol with a pH of 3.49. Tasted four times with consistent notes.

Licorice, smoke, crushed stones, flowers, and cherry aromatics open the perfume. The lusciously-textured palate offers vibrant, mineral-driven, red berries with elegance, lift, purity along with a blast of chocolate in the finish. There is so much concentration of soft, round, juicy fruits on the palate, you can enjoy this with just a year or two of aging. The wine blends 80% Merlot with 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. 14% ABV. The apparent reduction in the amount of new, French oak barrels for the aging added more freshness, and purity, which I like a lot. Drink from 2029-2050.

This is a classic expression of a high-quality terroir wine, conveying the character of limestone and clay with clarity and conviction. On the nose, the aromatics are restrained, seemingly at odds with the heat and dryness of the 2025 vintage, but do not rush to conclusions, as it soon reveals a pure and controlled sense of beauty. The entry is smooth and light, with juicy fruit gently spreading across the palate; with a moment of patience, a layer of chalky tannins, characteristic of limestone soils, gradually emerges. Throughout, the wine maintains a restrained and quiet line of expression, understated on the nose yet expansive on the palate. The fruit does not seek to burst forth, yet it carries ample complexity and layering. On the palate, it moves like ripples across still water, each circle revealing a subtle variation, offering particular satisfaction to those deeply familiar with Bordeaux. Château Villemaurine 2025 expresses a classic, traditional Bordeaux aesthetic, one that calls for time and patience, and is best appreciated by those who seek depth.

Colin Hay om: Chateau Villemaurine Grand Cru Classe

(Saint-Émilion; 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon; a final yield of 30 hl/ha; 14% ABV; tasted twice, the second time at the Association des Grands Crus Classés de Saint-Émilion tasting at Dassault). Sleek, stylish and elegant, with a lovely plunge-pool clarity to the mid-palate, the oak already perfectly integrated and the tannins present, but so fine-grained and spherical that they seem to convey the fruit forward in the mouth as if on little glass rollers. Plush, sapid and succulent, I love this. Villemaurine has been on top form for a decade; this is perhaps its crowning achievement to date. Floated on the finish and all the more ethereal for that.
