Bordeaux fik utroligt meget regn i foråret 2020. Det forblev tørt i den tidlige, men perfekte blomstringsperiode, og så regnede det igen. Men fra midten af juni til midten af august faldt der ikke en eneste dråbe regn. Det var en katastrofe for sandjord - vinstokkene led af tørkestress. Med lerjord, som vi har på de bedste steder i Médoc og Pomerol, eller på ren kalksten, som det ofte er tilfældet i Saint-Émilion, var det slet ikke noget problem. Især da der faldt omkring 80 millimeter regn i midten af august. Yderligere 15 millimeter i slutningen af august. Derefter var det tørt i hele september. Så stort set perfekte betingelser for fremragende terroir, perfekte betingelser for høj modenhed og rige tanninniveauer med ret moderat syre. Dette er også tilfældet for Château Margaux med sit lerrige terroir. 2020-blandingen: 89 procent Cabernet Sauvignon, otte procent Merlot, to procent Cabernet Franc og en procent Petit Verdot. Førstevinen udgør præcis en tredjedel af Château Margaux' samlede volumen, en tredjedel af andenvinen Pavillon Rouge og en tredjedel af tredjevinen. Som regel går de ældste vinstokke til Grand Vin, men der er ingen særlige parceller inden for det samlede vinmarksareal. Høsten i 2020 fandt sted mellem 10. og 30. september. Cabernet Sauvignon var naturligvis den sidste, der blev høstet. pH-værdien er 3,67, og syreindholdet er 3,58 gram pr. liter. Så ligesom i 2019 er syren ret lav, men 2020 fremstår meget anderledes end 2019. Tanninniveauet er sammen med 2018 det højeste, der nogensinde er målt på Château Margaux. Næsen: Dyb sort kirsebær, enormt velduftende, meget aromatisk. Intet aggressivt, men en vidunderlig modenhed, en sky af sorte kirsebærsmage. En meget lille antydning af cassis og søde morbær bagved, lidt hyldebær, let lakrids og lidt lys chokolade. Munden oversvømmes af intense smagsnuancer. I hvert fald i munden virker vinen betydeligt mindre syrlig end 2019, selv om de officielle værdier er de samme. Måske skyldes det det høje tanninniveau. Tanninerne er dog smørbløde, polerede, polerede. Ikke noget hårdt, ikke noget skørt, bare masser. Og de intense smage, som tydeligvis er mere rød end sort frugt i munden, skyller ind over, klæber sig fast og stopper slet ikke. Masser af moreller, hindbær og jordbær. Høj intensitet, lidt slåen, helt sikkert lidt krydret. Kun langsomt dukker de sorte kirsebær op igen. Vinen bliver hængende i minutter. Men dybest set er det ikke en vin, man skal knæle for, den er bare ekstremt velsmagende, harmonisk og afbalanceret. Det bliver mere og mere tydeligt, at 2020 producerer perfekte drikkevine, som man selvfølgelig ikke har råd til på grund af de vanvittige priser. Men i bund og grund perfekt - alles darling til hver dag. En sådan enorm hedonisme, en årgang, der er så sjov, selv i testfasen. Ikke så spændende som 2019, mere som 2018, simpelthen smuk. I modsætning til 2018 lidt livligere, lidt friskere i frugten. Minder meget om 2016, men 2020 er mere hedonistisk, blødere, mere imødekommende og mere fornøjelig. 100+/100

Suckling om: Chateau Margaux 1er Cru

Gorgeous aromas of dark plums and violets. Orange peel, too. Some crushed stone. Bark. Stems. Iron shavings. Full-bodied, but very tight and compacted. The tannins are all here making it very structured, yet they are polished and melted together. Needs years to show all of its greatness. Incredible polish and structure. More structured than the 2019. Try after 2030 and beyond.100/100

This has grip and poise, it edges forward with slate textured tannins, not givin too much away at first, but sit with it, because the future brilliance of this Margaux is there to be seen if you take your time. It displays a seriousness of intent that sets it apart in expression from vintages like the 2018, and has dense and powerful red and black fruits along with supple and plentiful tannins that have no intention of relinquishing their hold for decades to come. Gingerbread, liqourice root, grilled sandalwood, red peppers, mint leaf and peony flowers add waves of complexity as it widens and softens through the mid palate, along with raspberry puree and edges of patisserie cream. A Margaux for the ages. 100% new oak, 36hl/h yield after the dry summer. 100/100

The main impression felt on the palate of Margaux 2020 is that of velvet. It is as deep as it is elegant, with layers that evoke fresh, crisp and ripe fruit. The magnificent tannins are ideally integrated with the fruit. Very close to the 2019, this has just a touch more density to it. A graceful wine. 99-100/100

A brilliant Margaux; one that takes a sigh and then releases the huge floral, eucalyptus and crushed mint whoosh that comes in waves though the palate. You get the concentration of the vintage in an entirely positive light, with a suave softness to the tannins that makes it stand head and shoulders above many others. Plenty in common with the 1996 vintage - the knitted down tannins, the completeness, the juicy blackcurrant purity and acidity on the finish, and the certainty of long ageing. Real clarity of flavour. Alcohol level is lower than both the 2018 and 2019, but tannins and anthocyanins are at the same level as in 2018. 36% of overall harvest, and 1% Petit Verdot completes the blend. A yield of 36hl/ha. 98-100/100

The purity of the fruit in the nose is striking. From there you move to notes of allspice, tobacco, roses, truffle, smoke, roasted plums, cherries and currants. Incredibly sensuous, silky and fresh, the fruit literally coats your palate with layers of velvet and silk textured berries. Intensely concentrated, weightless and effortless to drink, the wine seamlessly glides across your senses and holds with you for at least 60 seconds. This is a prodigious vintage of Chateau Margaux. The product of an early vintage, picking took place September 10 to September, 30. Yields were 36 hectoliters per hectare, with the Grand Vin produced from only 36% of the crop. The wine blends 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc, 13.5% ABV, 3.68 Ph. 98-100/100

Barrel Sample. The fruit, with the acidity that is a hallmark of the year, gives black currant flavors from the nearly 90% Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. The tannins seem supple with a structure that leans into the fruit. It's a remarkably consistent wine, velvet while structured. 98-100/100

The 2020 Château Margaux, re-tasted at the château, is a little more open on the nose, revealing even more of its stunning delineation, just so pixelated. Black cherries, blueberry and perhaps a tad more red fruit than I noticed in the sample tasted in the UK, more classic in style. The palate is harmonious and poised with ethereal delineation, building in the mouth towards an almost pixelated finish that is utterly irresistible. There is heightened mineralité compared to the previous sample with astonishing persistence. I suspect this is one Left Bank where the 2020 will surpass the previous two vintages, but as Philippe Bascaule himself commented, it is a wine for his children rather than himself. This is even better than the sample sent to the UK, hence my higher score. Will it achieve perfection? We'll find out soon(ish).
