En god 40 år gammel Grenache i form af en buskgris. Fra Fitero i den sydlige del af Navarra på grænsen til Rioja. Godt 2 hektar klippefyldt, stenet terroir, grønt, alt organisk og naturligt. Ler, sand, sten og kalksten, vinstokkene her i over 500 meters højde må arbejde hårdt. Håndplukket og delvist afstilket, spontangæret i beton. Modnet i brugte 500 liters barriques og i store træfade. Godt 10.000 flasker. Ganske lys kirsebærrød farve med sorte refleksioner. Urtekrydret (rosin) kirsebærsaft med et strejf af hindbær, grafit og sort peber. Et strejf af jordbær bagved, meget ren, meget stringent. Lækker hedonistisk mundindgang, ribs med salt og kalksten møder kirsebær, surkirsebær og vilde hindbær. Overraskende lav sødme for Grenache, de 14 grader alkohol kan ikke overskues. Elegance og pikanthed konkurrerer med hinanden, en elegant vin, lækker og dog også krævende. Saftigt, burgundisk flow med en saftig, pikant friskhed. Meget spændende 95+/100

Årgangsrapport

Bordeaux fik utroligt meget regn i foråret 2020. Under den tidlige, men perfekte blomstringsperiode var det tørt i fjorten dage, hvorefter det straks begyndte at regne. Fra midten af juni til midten af august faldt der imidlertid ikke en eneste dråbe regn. Det var en katastrofe for sandjord - vinstokkene led af tørkestress. Med lerjord, som vi har på de bedste steder i Médoc og Pomerol, eller på ren kalksten, som det ofte er tilfældet i Saint-Émilion, var det slet ikke noget problem. Der faldt omkring 80 millimeter regn på den venstre bred i midten af august. Yderligere 15 millimeter i slutningen af august. Derefter var det tørt i hele september. Så stort set perfekte betingelser for fremragende terroir, perfekte betingelser for høj modenhed og rige tanninniveauer med forholdsvis moderat syre.

This Garnacha is part of Zorzal’s series of terroir-focused wines. Coming from Fitero, a village at the base of the mountains in the south of Navarra that separate the region from La Rioja, the 40-year-old vines are grown at 520m on rocky soils on limestone and clay. The wine is defined by an elegant and precise structure but does not lack any intensity with blackberry fruit, black pepper and a little mint. With just enough tannic grip, it is profound yet full of energy and drive. 2024-31 97/100

A longtime favorite of mine and still a bargain, the 2021 Malayeto is always one of the most elegant and finest wines from Zorzal. It comes from 2.39 hectares of vines that are now 43 years old, planted at 520 meters altitude on limestone-rich soils in the village of Fitero, on the same slope as their Corral de los Altos. It fermented in a combination of stainless steel and concrete and matured in 12 used 500-liter barrels and one 4,000-liter oak foudre for one year. It has 13.45% alcohol and is medium-bodied with great balance, finesse, freshness and acidity. It has good depth and a sense of good ripeness (riper than Corral de los Altos this year!). There is great consistency in this vineyard, and this wine is serious, precise and long. 13,300 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2023. 94/100

Malayeto was the first wine to be launched in our series of terroir-focused wines. From Fitero, the only place in Navarra located in the Iberian Mountains, just on the geological border between the Sierra de Cameros mountains and the Ebro river basin. The Malayeto parcel is found at latitude of 42.05 and an altitude of 520 metres, the soils are rocky and stony, with variegated clays (heterogeneous), limestone and composite soils. These characteristics, in conjunction with the continental climate, mean that the roots have to burrow deep into the soil to find water. We are working on improving the biodiversity of this vineyard, as well as taking active steps to recuperate the native flora. Along with sustainable viticulture practices, these factors define the unique terroir of a sole plot of land. It is a complex vintage, marked by the last month in harvest, there were almost perfect conditions until September, when torrential rains complicated matters. Sorting, selecting, and discarding grapes was key, after this, surprisingly, we are facing one of our top vintages ever. Alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel and concrete vats, using just indigenous yeast, 12 months ageing in 500-liter one and two years used frech barrel and in 4.500-liter wooden tank. Appearance: Clear, medium intensity, ruby colour wine. Nose: Clean, high intensity fresh aromas of black fruit such us blackberry, blackcurrant, also black pepper, cedar and earthy notes. Palate: Dry and fresh, soft tannins and medium body. Black fruit flavours, mineral hints and a long finish.
