Heiner Lobenberg om:
Vieux Chateau Certan 2012
/100
Jord, chokolade, kaffe.

The 2012 Vieux Chateau Certan is medium to deep garnet-purple colored. It charges out with impressively pure, laser-precise, and intense scents of blueberry compote, chocolate-covered cherries, and warm plum, plus hints of cinnamon toast, dried roses, and forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, rich, and oh-so-classy in the mouth, the palate delivers velvety tannins and compelling tension, finishing very long and opulent. The blend this year is 87% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Jeb Dunnuck om: Vieux Chateau Certan
The 2012 Vieux Château Certan is absolutely brilliant, but it shows a more Cabernet Franc-dominated style in its pure cassis, spring flower, graphite, green tobacco, and lead pencil-like aromas and flavors. These carry over to the palate, where the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a focused, pure, precise mouthfeel carrying ultra-fine tannins, remarkable purity, and a rare mix of freshness, elegance, and persistence. Where current vintages are more about incredible opulence without any sensation of weight, this is more about fineness, purity, and precision. It’s a sensational Pomerol that is just now in its early prime drinking window and has another two decades of longevity.

Jane Anson om: Vieux Chateau Certan
Tasted at the Duquesne club in Pittsburgh during a wonderful event to celebrate their 150th anniversary. Still young at 13 years old, but the tannins are beginning to melt into the raspberry and redcurrant fruits, and the violet aromatics that you can spend years searching for in Pomerol uncurl out of the glass with barely a coaxing. Fine but plentiful tannins suggest this has decades ahead of it. Particularly special because George Thienpont bought the estate in 1924, meaning that next year in 2024 they are celebrating their 100th anniversary in the family. 50% new oak.

Neal Martin om: Vieux Chateau Certan
This is a Merlot year for Alexandre and his son Guillaume: the 2012 a blend o 87% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc and just 1% Cabernet Sauvignon (the latter due to a parcel being replanted at the moment.) The nose is very well defined and lively, real "energy” coming from the glass. There are crisp scents of blackcurrant, wild strawberry and a tangible stoniness – very expressive of its terroir. The palate is superb: real tension and purity here, crisp acidity, tensile tannins that lend this VCC edginess and race. The fruit is black rather than red with a sense of poise and superbly assimilated oak on the nervous finish. What a great Pomerol for the vintage!

Tim Atkin om: Vieux Chateau Certan
Alexandre Thienpont describes the Merlot in his 2012 as "simple”, saying that it needs the Cabernet Franc for complexity and palate length, but I think he’s being too hard on his own wine. This isn’t another 2010 VCC, but it’s still a delight: perfumed, grassy and supple with bramble and green pepper notes, silky tannins and well handled oak. A château enjoying a rich vein of form.

Barrel sample. Perfumed, elegant wine with an unusually high proportion of Merlot at the expense of Cabernet. Spicy, fruit cake and dried fruits go with a stylish blackberry character. Complex and set for a long aging.

Suckling om: Vieux Chateau Certan
Slightly leafy on the nose, showing eucalyptus leaves, earthy minerality, mushrooms and leather. Yet there’s a fresh note of anise, too. Classic vintage here, with silky, relatively lighter tannins, medium body and a slightly more rustic finish, though enriched with dark-chocolate and cold-coffee details. Drinkable now, but will last for at least another decade.

Jancis Robinson om: Vieux Chateau Certan
Deep crimson. Leafy nose – quite distinctive. Juicy fruit that very suave but not one of the most concentrated. Very nicely balanced and with very ripe tannins and backbone. A great drink now. But no hurry. Juicy fruit. Neat and complete. Firm. Hint of bitter dark chocolate. 14%
