Decanter om:
Cornerstone
Johan Reyneke’s Cornerstone project was set up to direct the profits from the sales of this label into providing housing, education and opportunities for the black workers on the estate’s Polkadraai farm. A philosophy graduate, Reyneke’s motto is ‘there can be no greatness without goodness’. The cool 2021 vintage blend is based on 58% Cabernet Franc and 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, biodynamically farmed, wild fermented and aged for 18 months in new 225-litre French oak barrels for the Cabernet Sauvignon and used oak for the Cabernet Franc. Jason Millar: Hints of caper and sage on a nose of blackcurrant. Chiselled, and bone dry, with fine, chalky tannins framing vibrantly juicy fruit. Lovely bite and texture. Roger Jones: Juicy, fresh, forward appeal with sage and violet, along with some spicy fresh notes, ripe berries with vanilla spice. I like the focus and linear mineral notes here, and the lovely, savoury lamb-juice finish. Victoria Mason MW: Dried floral, leafy and spicy fragrance. Freshness, purity and bite – focused, with masses of energy, lots of chalky tannins. Superb, but still needs time.
