The 2022 Meursault 1er Cru Genevrières is seamless and suave, wafting from the glass with notes of white flowers, sweet yellow orchard fruit, orange zest, citrus blossom and buttery pastry. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, with a deep and layered core of bright, pure fruit, it concludes with a long, expansive finish. 94-95/100

As is often the case, the Genevrières is the biggest of the premier crus in Lafon's cellar, with a rich, honeyed fruit aroma with notes of ripe apples, apricots, and quince. The texture is weighty and dense, yet not lacking the freshness to bring it into balance. The grapes are from a half-hectare in Genevrières Dessus, most of it was planted eighty years ago with massale selection, but 25% replanted with clones in the 1990s. The grapes are slowly pressed as whole clusters and fermented on native yeasts in mainly used casks. 95/100

This half-hectare parcel is rather old and produces a riotously concentrated wine as a result. From fragrance to saturated palate to finish, this is all dialed up to 11. Perfumed tree blooms give way to scented apples, peach pit, leesiness and even more nuanced sub-tones. The spicy back palate adds another stroke of complexity. 94/100
