Som biodynamisk vingård skulle Pontet Canet have haft store problemer i 2016, fordi foråret var så utroligt vådt. Det regnede med en utrolig intensitet og kontinuitet helt ind i juni. Hver eneste dag. Dette blev efterfulgt af den store tørke. Men Pontet Canet har praktiseret biodynamisk vindyrkning i så lang tid, at vinstokkene nu er så modstandsdygtige og sunde, at de var i stand til at klare begge dele relativt godt. Biodynamik kræver selvfølgelig en masse specialsprøjtning i de våde faser. Derefter var der kun lidt stress, og i september kom der en kortvarig guddommelig regn, som satte gang i det hele igen. Druesammensætningen i 2016 består af 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot. Næsen er klart den mest modne næse af alle de vine, jeg smagte i Pauillac og også i Saint Julien. Så tæt, så dyb, så krydret. I denne dybe, modne blommesmag. Sorte kirsebær og søde morbær. Minder næsten om en meget moden Saint Emilion. Den ultrapolerede, fine, elegante mund afviser ikke næsen, men er afhængig af denne ekstreme, jordede naturlighed. Et strejf af friskhed på toppen. En poleret, poleret kvalitet. Vi er så smagfulde her, så jordnære, så dybe. Vi er ikke så smarte her som den superpræcise Mouton Rothschild, naboen, men vi er utroligt naturlige. Det er den slags vin, man forventer af biodynamik. En vin som Chateau Coutet Demoiselle i Saint Emilion med denne krydrede, rige dybde. Ren natur. Og alligevel med en masse tryk. Tanninerne er bløde som smør. Den blommeagtige friskhed afbalancerer den vidunderlige mørke frugt perfekt. En smuk længde. Men det, der især kendetegner denne vin, er dens store jordede, krydrede, dybe, rige harmoni. En vin, der minder meget mere om en Chateau Latour end sin nabo Mouton eller Pichon Comtesse. Og i den henseende er Pontet Canet endnu mere unik og endnu mere "helt anderledes" end alle tidligere års Pauillac'er. Pontet Canet bevæger sig længere og længere væk fra mainstream og fra ultraklassisk Pauillac. Ud over de store elskere af denne totale naturlighed vil der også være kendere, som finder Pontet Canet for lidt bekræftet i deres forventninger. Man kan elske den, men man kan også afvise den. Under alle omstændigheder er det en vin, der polariserer med sin egenart, i hvert fald på venstre bred. På højre bred har vi nogle flere af disse unikke vine. I Pessac Léognan er Seguin f.eks. også helt unik. Men her i det nordlige Medoc er det ret sjældent. Jeg tror, at den biodynamiske tilgang gennem så mange år har gjort denne ændring mulig. Men denne ændring er, hvad Tesseron-familien ønsker. Jeg er stadig overbevist om, at denne dybe, krydrede, søde sorte og røde frugt og jordbundenhed, denne høje modenhed, skal man kunne lide, men man kan også afvise den. Uanset hvad er det en stor vin for mig. Den største påmindelse om denne vin er helt sikkert naturvinsbevægelsen i Saint Emilion, et strejf af Tertre Roteboeuf, og det hele blandet med Seguin fra Pessac Léognan. Og alligevel er det en unik og typisk Pauillac. Store, meget polariserende ting.

A voluptuous wine, this is rich and fruity yet properly balanced by a magnificent structure. Pure, crisp and packed with a black currant flavor, this will be a remarkable wine as it develops. Still young, it needs many years to develop.

The 2016 Pontet-Canet is absolutely breathtaking. Powerful, ample and racy in the glass, the 2016 is one of the most exquisitely well-balanced young Pontet-Canets I can remember tasting. Savory, high-toned aromatics and brisk mineral notes lend energy and delineation as this vivid wonderfully alive wine opens up in the glass. The flavors are dark and incisive, but it is the wine's total sense of harmony that is most compelling. All of the elements are simply in the right place. The 2016 is tremendous. It's as simple as that. As is often the case, Pontet-Canet is one of the most singular wines in Bordeaux. Alfred Tesseron could have chosen to play things safe when he took over the management of the estate in the mid-1990s. Instead, he chose a very different path. No proprietor in Bordeaux has taken more risks over the last two decades than Alfred Tesseron. A commitment to biodynamic farming, sustainability across the entire estate more broadly, and the adoption of new concepts for Bordeaux, such as aging a portion of the wine in terra cotta, set Pontet-Canet apart from other properties in Pauillac and the Left Bank. Not surprisingly, the wine is also starkly different from the wines of neighboring estates.

Very deep purple-black in color, the 2018 Pontet-Canet rocks up with fantastically expressive plum preserves, baked blueberries and crème de cassis notes with touches of Chinese five spice, potpourri, licorice and chocolate mint plus a hint of smoked meats. Full-bodied, rich, super-concentrated and decadent, it has a firm frame of wonderfully velvety tannins with bold freshness to back up the fruit, finishing very long and very spicy. 98+/100

Reminding me of the 2010 and, I suspect, a wine that will merit a triple-digit rating in a decade or so (I tasted this on multiple occasions and thought it was perfect on one of them), the 2016 Château Pontet-Canet comes from 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and the balance Petit Verdot that spent 16 months in 50% new French oak, 35% in concrete amphora, and the rest in second fill oak. Thrilling notes of pure crème de cassis, lead pencil shavings, crushed mint, graphite, and crushed rock notes all emerge from this deep, powerful, yet elegant Pauillac. The style of this wine has become more and more finesse-driven and pure, yet it hasn’t lost a beat on concentration or length. This singular, beautiful Pontet-Canet needs 7-8 years of cellaring (it has some accessibility today given its purity and balance) and will keep for 4-5 decades. 98+/100

Top wine of the vertical. Deep, violet hue. Even if the nose is slightly closed, initially, what pure fruit! A degree higher in alcohol than the 2015, but superb balance. The pristine fruit, fine-grained tannins, focus and precision lead to an outstanding finish, surpassing even the 2010. It has the sumptuousness of the 2015, but the arc and tension of the 2010.Great capacity for ageing. Aged 50% new oak , 35% amphora.

Oh this is good. We are fully up to 2010 level here and coming close to surpassing it. A full wall of tannins, one of those wines that you have to scale to get to the heights but the views are great at the top. Cassis, bilberry, liqourice, black chocolate, aniseed, all with a sense of enegy and such freshness on the finish. Clear depth and vivacity to all elements of this wine. It needs time, because the tannins are a little forbidding right now, but it is going to be worth the wait. Harvest September 28 to October 12.
