Pavie Macquin ligger i umiddelbar nærhed af Troplong Mondot. Den har været dyrket økologisk i mange år. Den nuværende superstjerne inden for ønologi i Saint Emilion, Stephane Derenoncourt, var tidligere vinmarkschef på Pavie Macquin og har skabt sit første værk her. Terroiret består af kalksten med et ler/sandlag, ganske enestående. Direktøren Nicolas Thienpont har stået i spidsen i mange år. Stephane Derenoncourt er også ønologisk konsulent. Næsen er forbløffende fin for den ellers altid relativt opulente Pavie Macquin, der kører smukt på de sorte og røde kirsebær. Så fin, så elegant. Det er faktisk den smarteste næse, jeg har haft, siden jeg lærte Pavie Macquin at kende. Så vidunderlig på kirsebær, også slåen. Meget fin let lakrids, mynte, stor floralitet. Duftende, rig og alligevel ultrafin. Jeg elsker denne burgundiske næse. Smagen er meget mere overdådig. Men også her er det overvejende kirsebær. Surkirsebær, røde kirsebær, masser af sorte kirsebær. Smuk tæthed, næsten overdådighed i munden. Men så frisk blomme, knust hindbær. Stor længde, masser af mineralitet, saltet varer i minutter og rulles op igen og igen med kirsebær og blomme. Syren er også meget fin. Tanninen er ultrapoleret, rigelig, men superfin. Den noget rødfrugtede, finere udgave af naboen Troplong Mondot. Men der er en vis lighed med hensyn til overdådighed og rigdom. En super Pavie Macquin.

Possibly the finest vintage of this cuvée to date, the 2016 Château Pavie Macquin comes from a cooler, later terroir on the upper plateau and checks in as 82% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 50% new oak. This deep, inky-colored effort boasts a rock star bouquet of blackcurrants, black cherries, white truffle, graphite, and spice. Deep, rich, and powerful on the palate, yet also balanced, elegant, and seamless, with ultra-fine tannins, this seamless beauty needs a decade of cellaring and will keep for 4-5 decades.

The 2016 Pavie Macquin is a total stunner. Rich, lush and inviting, the 2016 is a drop-dead gorgeous beauty. Sweet red cherry, plum, rose petal, lavender and mint are all given an extra kick of allure by silky tannins that caress the palate from start to finish. There is a level of precision and nuance here that is simply breathtaking. The purity of the fruit is just mind-boggling.

A perfect example of coiled sinewy tannins, a fist of steel wrapped in velvet. This is so juicy yet so reserved, fully walking the tightrope of light and shade. Meticulous layers of butterscotch, cigar, turmeric, dill, mandarin peel, with sculpted clarity to the cooly-reserved blackcurrant and bilberry fruits, extremely complex and clearly determined to be around for many decades. Part of the oustanding vintages series within this vertical - and where you could just about drink the 2017 today, I would strongly suggest not doing so with the 2016. 60% new oak.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2016 Pavie Macquin charges out of the glass with gregarious black cherries, warm blackberries and wild blueberries scents followed up by loads of red roses, baking spices, cedar chest and unsmoked cigars sparks plus a waft of wild thyme. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is an exercise in poise, revealing layer upon layer of cherries and berries flavors and tons of savory nuances, framed by firm yet exquisitely ripe tannins, finishing very long.
