Heiner Lobenberg om:
Chateau Margaux 1er Cru 2023

89 procent Cabernet Sauvignon, fem procent Merlot, fire procent Cabernet Franc og to procent Petit Verdot. 13 procent alkohol i volumen.

The 2023 Château Margaux, which was bottled at the beginning of July, is a supremely gifted wine for the vintage. It unfolds in the glass with precise, quite mineral-driven black cherry and blueberry fruit, the patina of new oak suggesting it will require six or seven years in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied with a satin-like texture that lends this First Growth weightlessness, yet paradoxically, there is still impressive concentration and persistence. This was so seductive in barrel and it has lost none of that in bottle.

The Wine Palate om: Chateau Margaux 1er Cru

The 2023 Château Margaux, accounting for 41% of this year’s crop, is deep garnet-purple in color. It needs a little shaking to wake up evocative notes of crushed blackcurrants, fresh blackberries, and black raspberries, leading to an undercurrent of licorice, violets, tar, and forest floor. The medium-bodied palate is dense with black fruit and earthy layers, framed by beautifully ripe, fine-grained tannins and great tension, finishing long and perfumed. Classic Margaux! The blend is 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, with a pH of 3.60.

Suckling om: Chateau Margaux 1er Cru

Blackberries and red currants with baking spices and dried flowers. Full-bodied and dense, showing solid, crunchy, powdery tannins that give the wine great depth and intensity. Remains polished and integrated. Very tight and savory at the end. A blend of 89% cabernet sauvignon, 5% merlot, 4% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot.

Jeff Leve om: Chateau Margaux 1er Cru

n competition for wine of the vintage, with a single swirl, you find roses violets, lilacs, black, with red cherries, espresso, cocoa, and boysenberries in the haunting aromatic profile. On the palate, the wine is silky, velvety, energetic, and lively. Instead of the weight and intensity found in the 2022, the 2023 focuses on its purity, refinement, length, vivacity, and sensual textures. The seamless finish resonates for 60 seconds, leaving you with lingering waves of incredibly sweet, and pure cherries. Part of the reason for the success of the vintage at Margaux is due to the combination of the amount of rain, and even more importantly, the timing of the rains, which helped the vines reach a better level of maturity. It is interesting to note that macerations were slow, and easy, with some vats taking 28 days due to the lower ABV levels. The wine blends 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. 13.1% ABV. 3.61 pH, 15% press wine. 41% of the crop was placed into the Grand Vin. Picking took place September 11-October 6. The length of the harvest was due to intermittent periods of rain during the harvest, so picking stopped and started, which is another key to the success in 2023.

Jeb Dunnuck om: Chateau Margaux 1er Cru

The Grand Vin 2023 Château Margaux is based on 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc and was aged 21 months in 100% new French oak. Deep purple-hued and opaque, it offers sensational aromatics of crème de cassis, mulberries, flowery incense, blue fruits, graphite, and smoky tobacco on the nose. It's full-bodied on the palate and has a broad, layered, seamless mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a gorgeous finish. It's not far off the style of the 2020 and is shockingly good! Will it shut down? Time will tell, but this is a sensational effort that deserves a solid decade of bottle age. Drink 2035-2073.

Galloni om: Chateau Margaux 1er Cru

The 2023 Château Margaux is a delicate, beguiling wine. Floral aromatics make a strong first impression. A wine of nuance and understatement, the Margaux Grand Vin is light on its feet, with sublime balance and tons of class. This has closed down quite a bit since I tasted it from barrel, but that is not especially surprising. Readers will find a super-classic Grand Vin—a Margaux that is exactly as it should be.

Jane Anson om: Chateau Margaux 1er Cru

The colour has retained its vibrant ruby red of En Primeur, and this is exceptional, totally delivers on promise. The silky, velvety quality of the tannins is immediately apparent, as is the length and breadth of the palate. Waves of cassis, lavender, sage, blackberry, real concentration and intensity, with squid ink that combines umami depth and salinity. 41hl/h yield (compared to 25hl/h last year), 41% of the production in this 1st wine. First year organic conversion, with certification expected in 2026. Superb winemaking from Philippe Bascaules.

Decanter om: Chateau Margaux 1er Cru

Quite a herbal nose, full of blackcurrant leaf and bramble fruit, dark chocolate, violets - subtle, not shouting, but interesting. Round and ripe, a nice weight in the mouth, silky, but also like crushed velvet, mouthwatering acidity, so juicy and clean, a lovely texture in the mouth. Not chewy at all, but there’s depth here, a cushioning to the palate with incredible juiciness. Charming, gentle yet lively. It's is just so appealing but this will benefit from oak ageing too. Carefully made, tannins are wonderful and the acidity doesn’t stick out. You also don’t sense the heat, but the fruit is ripe, with freshness all the way through. A wonderful wine in 2023. 2% Petit Verdot completes the blend with 4% Cabernet Franc, the highest percentage ever in the blend. 41% grand vin production. 3.6pH, 15% press. Officially certified organic as of 2023. Ageing 100% new oak, 18 months.

The Wine Independent om: Chateau Margaux 1er Cru

The 2023 Chateau Margaux, accounting for 41% of this year's crop, is deep garnet-purple in color. A little shy to begin, it needs some swirling before notes of black cherries, blackcurrant pastilles, and anise emerge from the glass, leading to suggestions of fragrant soil, lilacs, and cardamom with a touch of iron ore. The medium-bodied palate is elegantly crafted, with fabulous tension creating an exhilarating sense of energy in the mouth, offset by firm fine-grained tannins to support the vibrant red and black berry layers, finishing long and perfumed. So fragrant and graceful, this could only be Chateau Margaux! The blend is 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, with pH 3.60. "There is a little more Cabernet Franc this year. More and more has been making it into the First Wine. We have been grafting over some vines to Cabernet Franc and planting more."

Colin Hay om: Chateau Margaux 1er Cru

(Margaux; 89% Cabernet Sauvignon; 5% Merlot; 4% Cabernet Franc; 2% Petit Verdot; pH 3.6; a final yield of 41 hl/ha despite the mildew pressure, higher than in 2022; 13% alcohol; 100% new oak, but you’ve never know; they picked less than 5 hectares per day, in comparison to the usual 9 hectares with a team of 250, due to the additional sorting required; there was some desiccation and burning of grapes on the vines; in conversion to organic; 41 per cent of the production was selected for the grand vin). Aerial and utterly sublime aromatically. So beautiful. So gracious. So elegant. So ethereal. Glass ceiling transcendent (shattering is to brutal a metaphor), this has the most gorgeous texture. There’s a tear in the corner of my eye as I taste this, so beguilingly beautiful is it – it’s a Donizetti aria of a wine. The texture. So gentle. So soft. So comforting. So caressing. The best wine of the appellation by some distance in this vintage. Black cherry and cedar, with a little graphite. A study in what Bordeaux has achieved in both the vineyard and the cellar in the last decade. So harmonious, so elegant and so completely at one with itself. The pure berry and stone fruit is supported to the horizon on a pillow of the finest tannins. Potentially the wine of the vintage
