Bordeaux fik utroligt meget regn i foråret 2020. I løbet af den tidlige, men perfekte blomstringsperiode var det tørt i 14 dage, hvorefter det straks begyndte at regne. Fra midten af juni til midten af august faldt der imidlertid ikke en eneste dråbe regn. Det var en katastrofe for sandjord - vinstokkene led af tørkestress. Med lerjord, som vi har på de bedste steder i Médoc og Pomerol, eller på ren kalksten, som det ofte er tilfældet i Saint-Émilion, var det slet ikke noget problem. Der faldt omkring 80 millimeter regn på den venstre bred i midten af august. Yderligere 15 millimeter i slutningen af august. Derefter var det tørt i hele september. Så stort set perfekte betingelser for fremragende terroir, perfekte betingelser for høj modenhed og rige tanninniveauer med ret moderat syre. 2020 er en meget typisk Léoville Barton. Den har altid en særlig plads i Saint-Julien, fordi frugten generelt er mørkere og mere overdådig end i de to andre Léovilles. Betydeligt mere sorte kirsebær og mørk lakrids. Brombær, søde morbær, intens viol og rosenblade. Stort tryk, let chokoladenote. I munden klassisk Saint-Julien, 2016-stil. Lidt kirsebærlikør, fantastisk syre og længde, kører på ribs. Surkirsebær, prangende, fuld af finesse. Ikke desto mindre god krop. En ekstremt fin Léoville Barton. Så frisk som 2019. Moden, men ikke overmoden. Alt rammer plet. En ret perfekt vin. Og for Léoville Barton helt sikkert en af de store vine i denne vingårds historie. Eftersmagen bliver hængende i minutter med en let krydrethed, sort peber, surkirsebær og ribs. Salt, eftersmagen forsvinder aldrig. Dette er en stor, elegant, delikat, finesserig Léoville Barton, som er et perfekt modstykke til den store modenhed. Strålende sager. 97-100/100

The 2020 Leoville Barton has a deep garnet-purple color. It is incredibly primary and youthful with expressive scents of crème de cassis, ripe juicy plums, and black raspberries, opening out to hints of vanilla pod, coffee, star anise, and tilled soil. Medium-bodied, the palate is beautifully restrained, with lovely tension and firm, very fine-grained tannins, finishing so long and achingly graceful. Wow! 98/100

The flagship from this great château, the 2020 Château Léoville Barton checks in as 85.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14.5% Merlot that saw 60% new French oak. It has fabulous aromatics of crème de cassis, graphite, liquid violets, spring flowers, and background oak. Full-bodied and concentrated on the palate, its purity of fruit is just about off the chart, it has a great mid-palate, and enough tannins to warrant 7-8 years of bottle age. This is another sensational wine from this team that will have 30-40 years of overall longevity. 97+/100

Whereas so many Saint-Juliens are exuberant in 2020, Léoville-Barton is very much buttoned up, showing just a twinkle of mischief that lets you know the best is yet to come. 96/100

The 2020 Léoville Barton has a very concentrated and opulent bouquet with lavish blueberry and bilberry fruit and a veneer of new oak that will be subsumed in the near future. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent, ripe tannins. Cedar and touches of baking powder infuse the layered red fruit, segueing into a spicy, persistent finish. Classy. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.
