Batailley ligger på samme afkørselsvej fra Pauillac, overfor Grand Puy Lacoste. Batailley har brug for varme, varme år for virkelig at vise sin klasse. Skiftet fra Saint-Julien-appellationen til Pauillac er meget spændende, fra Talbot til Batailley. Næsen bliver mere sort og monogam. Rige brombær, morbær, sorte kirsebær. Masser af tryk, lige finish, meget god definition. Meget klassisk og alligevel sød. Ikke sprød i munden. Det havde jeg frygtet, men det kommer ikke. Superstruktureret ligefremhed, alt passer perfekt, stor harmoni. Men stadig i den sorte frugt, med lakrids og chokolade. Superdefinerede hjørner og kanter. Altid ligeud. Ikke førstepladsen i Pauillac, men bestemt i andenpladsen, i det øvre midterfelt. Ekstremt ren, klassisk, moden og hedonistisk Pauillac for elskere af appellationen. Ellers er det bedre at skifte over til det højere Saint-Julien-hjørne. Pauillac er virkelig meget klassisk i 2020. Men moden og harmonisk, kun med ambitioner. Den har noget! 96-97+/100

Aromas of black and red currants as well as orange. Ink pot. Cassis bush. Bramble berry. Graphite. Full-bodied yet tight and back-loaded with intense tannins, but they turn soft and polished. Very classic structure. Reminds me of a top Batailley from the 1980s, like 1985, but much more precise and clear. 70% cabernet sauvignon, 26% merlot, 2% petit verdot, and 2% cabernet franc. Try after 2030. 95/100

The 2020 Batailley appears to have gone up a couple of gears since I tasted it just after bottling. It has a perfumed, wonderfully precise nose, almost Margaux-like in style, with scents of cassis and crushed violet blossoming in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent blackberry and hints of licorice on the entry. It's quite saline, building with confidence toward the finish of real heft. This will need a decade to come around, but it will be worth waiting for. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

Always a Pauillac that I love to recommend, as it is packed with appellation signature, and it suits the slightly serious character of 2020. Entirely delivers on En Primeur promise, with charcoal, cigar box, slate, crayon and fragrant mint leaf set against waves of black cherry and cassis fruit. 42hl/ha, owned by the Casteja family. 94/100

The 2020 Château Grand-Puy Ducasse is a brilliant, powerful, age-worthy Pauillac that will reward bottle age. Blackcurrants, tobacco, cedar pencil, and chocolate are just some of its nuances, and this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a dense, mouth-filling texture, plenty of ripe tannins, and outstanding length. It's not the most elegant Pauillac out there, but it has quintessential aromatics, structure, and density, and is beautifully done, as well as incredibly satisfying. It will probably take a decade of bottle age to hit maturity, and it should have 30-40 years of overall longevity. Tasted three times. 94/100
