Traditionelt var alle vinmarkerne i Rioja Alaveza beplantet med ca. 90 % Tempranillo og ca. 10 % Viura. Det var en torn i øjet på Juan Carlos' stræben efter kvalitet. Han ville presse de bedste røde Rioja'er, og Viura bidrager ikke nødvendigvis til dybde og koncentration. Så Viura-høsten blev solgt helt fra. Juan Carlos er blevet provokeret af de legendariske hvide vine fra Marques de Murrieta og Riscal og har nu besluttet at presse disse druer selv. Resultatet er mere end storslået. En fyldig hvidvin med en tydelig, men meget velintegreret brug af træ, som er en af de absolut bedste i Sydeuropa. Friskhakkede krydderurter, subtile honningnoter, hvid cassis og ultrafine, afbalancerede tanniner. Kompleks, tæt, men også legende. Efter et par timer smelter tanninerne væk, og træet kan kun fornemmes i den lange finish. En spændende vin i sin ungdom, en stor vin fra 10 år og opefter!

Parker om: Rioja Vinas de Gain Blanco

The only white produced here is the 2020 Viñas de Gaín Blanco, which is balsamic and aromatic, floral and herbaceous, from a fresher and more elegant vintage. It fermented with some skins to give it complexity and volume, but he has reduced the time the wine is in contact with the skins, and this year, the wine finished part of the fermentation in used 600-liter demi-muids and was kept in stainless steel with lees for two years. They have stopped racking the white, and they feel it keeps a livelier character. It has the profile of the traditional Rioja whites with a modern twist, cleaner, more focused and precise. It has a moderate 13% alcohol, a pH of 3.31 and 6.05 grams of sugar, fresh and vibrant. It's beautiful, possibly the best year for the white and a year they think was better for the white than for the reds. Bravo! 10,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2022. 94/100

Something of a rarity at Artadi - it's the bodega's only white wine - this is now a varietal Viura that dispensed with Malvasía in 2020. Textured and floral, it marries aromas of fennel and wild thyme with a palate that's very lightly wooded, textured yet refreshing, with flavours of lemongrass and citrus and a hint of nutmeg spice.
