Decanter om:
Terra di Monteverro
Like elsewhere in Tuscany, 2017 was a very dry year; even drier than 2012. Some big decisions had to be made but luckily the warm - not sweltering - spring bought the team some time to prepare by minimising the vigour of the vines. The Merlot, plus one block of Cabernet Sauvignon, was picked before 14 August to ensure the wine would retain freshness and have no overripe characters. The rest of the grapes were picked in the first half of September. Like many producers in 2017, Matthieu opted for a shorter maceration time to 'find a good balance of tannins'. The result is a wine with ripe cherry and black fruit aromas and flavours, imbued with an invigorating balsamic freshness. It's perhaps a touch hollow on the mid-palate, lacking some fruit intensity, but the finish is elegant. A blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cabernet Franc, 20% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, matured in French oak barrels (60% new) for 20 months. 93/100
