I also tasted the 2013 San Vicente, which will be released in September 2016, from a vintage that has provided fresh and elegant wine. It has great freshness within its style. This is clearly a lighter vintage, slightly different, more aromatic and floral, with tension and precision--a style I like very much. Volumes are lower, some 44,000 bottles, as they had to sort and select the fruit. 93/100

Toasty oak and saddle leather aromas lend complexity to a dark-fruited nose with minerality. This feels snappy, which is what you might expect from a high-end 2013 from Rioja. Oaky black-fruit flavors come with more than enough spice and earth notes, while this is toasty on the finish and also dry and firm in feel. 93/100

From a single vineyard named La Canoca located outside the village of San Vicente, the 2013 San Vicente is 100% Tempranillo Peludo (aka Hairy Tempranillo) that spent 20 months in 90% French oak and 10% American oak, all new. Blueberries, graphite, lead pencil, smoked earth, and violet notes, as well as hints of chocolate and graphite, all emerge from this medium to full-bodied, concentrated, beautifully pure and elegant Rioja. It's not massively concentrated, yet has fine tannin, impressive purity, and a beautiful finish. 93/100
