En utrolig rig Aglianico med mange lag. Frodig, struktureret, næsten tyk i sin voluminøse tæthed. Rig sort frugt med masser af krydderier fra kølige højder, fremragende afbalanceret og frisk på trods af sin balsamiske kraft, Taurasi bliver ikke meget bedre end dette. 95-97/100

Each time the 2016 Taurasi Riserva Piano di Monte Vergine is tilted in the glass, it seems to reveal further depths. This is simply stunning, casting silken textural waves of tart wild berry fruit, citrus tones and brilliant acidity. Energetic yet still youthfully tense and structured, its web of fine-grained tannins appears late, slowly clamping down as a rosemary and tangerine resonance mingles and fizzles out. The 2016 Piano di Monte Vergine is a classic in the making. 95+/100

An important wine that raised the bar in this storied appellation, the Feudi di San Gregorio 2016 Taurasi Riserva Piano di Montevergine shows well-managed evolution, polished tannins, dark fruit and lots of savory spice and campfire ash. There is some dusty mineral too that adds definition and complexity. The wine ages in oak for up to 24 months and sees another 12 months in bottle. Production is 80,000 bottles. 95/100

Very fragrant and exotic nose of fresh dates, turkish delight, red berries and mustard seed. Full-bodied with firm, silky tannins and some riserva-style oak that gives the fruit a darker edge, without removing the exotic nature. In fact, the fruit and spice brightens up on the finish. Long and flavorful with lots going on. Interesting to taste now, but this still has some way to go. Try from 2023. 94/100

Piano di Montevergine is high in the mountains of Irpinia on rugged slopes shared by olive and hazelnut trees, where cool winds buffet the vines and accentuate aglianico’s naturally high acidity. The vines were planted in 1986, the year Feudi di San Gregorio was founded, and the roots reach into deep, sandy volcanic soils that yielded firm, mineral tannins in this 2016 Taurasi. Detailed notes of licorice and fennel frond weave through the wine’s crunchy blackberry and plum flavors, and the wine maintains a sinuous frame as hints of blood and iron emerge. Decant an hour before serving to soften those muscular tannins and serve with a well-marbled ribeye. 94/100
