A tripartite blend of Clairette Blanche, Grenache Blanc and Roussanne, all from the lieu-dit of les Bédines, the 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc Les Safres finishes its fermentation in barrel, spending four months in older oak. Hints of pencil shavings accent white peach and tangerine notes, while this full-bodied wine is round, ripe and lush on the palate, almost tropical in style, finishing long and creamy. 94/100

Despite the richer style of the vintage, this stays vibrant and focused, with ample minerality on the finish. 94/100

There’s a creamy vanilla touch to the pear fruit on the nose, then really quite unctuous and rich on the palate. It does have some intensity and brightness to balance it, and a long finish. Great overall balance, good freshness, powerful but not excessive, this is classic white Châteauneuf. Fermented then aged for four months in old barrels. 94/100

Tasted blind. The palate shows limey, nutty, oaky notes. Such density and opulence on the attack, yet so much freshness beneath. Honeyed and mouth-coating but also with a core of fresh pear, stone fruit and really well-judged oak, which will integrate over the next two or so years. Excellent. 17,5/20
