Heiner Lobenberg om:
Chateau L'If Grand Cru 2023

Suckling om: Chateau L'If Grand Cru

This red is all about finesse and tension. Subtle aromas of dark berries, earth, mushrooms, lavender and violets. Medium-bodied with ultra-fine tannins and hints of chalk and spices such as nutmeg. Energetic at the end, with an almost pinot-like delicacy. 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc. Drinkable now, but better in a couple of years. Try after 2027.

Jeff Leve om: Chateau L'If Grand Cru

Quite floral in its nature, the wine is spicy, fresh, floral, and exuberant in the nose. On the palate, it is easy to see all the lift, and energy in the wine. The red berries have a vibrancy that gives energy, and length, paired with purity, and a refreshing, spicy endnote. This remains one of the new stars of St. Emilion and is a wine to follow before prices jump. The wine blends 80% Merlot with 20% Cabernet Franc, 14.1% ABV, pH 3.37. The harvest took place September 18-October 2. Drink from 2028-2050 95-97 Pts.

Colin Hay om: Chateau L'If Grand Cru

(Saint Émilion; 80% Merlot; 20% Cabernet Franc; pH 3.37; 14.1% alcohol; tasted with Jacques Thienpont and Diana Berrouet Garcia at Le Pin). Very beautiful. A lot of vineyard restructuration has taken place here and one now feels that a new kind of harmony has been achieved. A lovely wild herbal element, quite a tight frame, very mineral and fresh, chiselled by the pure calcaire tannins. Lovely texturally, this is shimmering and limpid, glistening and plush, with ripples of freshness and broad sheets of fine-textured silk. A brilliantly detailed bright dark berry fruit – brambles and blackberry above all. Wondrous texture with lovely fine-grained powdery chalky tannins. L’If is no longer a work in progress. Vivid and bright but never austere or strict, this is delicate and refined where other limestone Saint Émilions are typically a little austere. Joyous.

Tim Atkin om: Chateau L'If Grand Cru

Very deep and concentrated aroma with violets and predominantly red fruits. Raspberry strawberry and some thyme. This promises much, including a degree of elegance. Rich and with very fresh acidity (pH3.37) and the coolness of the Cabernet. The flavours, though, are of a very pure expression of Merlot with ripe plum and red berries. The tannins are very refined and already integrated with a degree of silkiness. Long and multi-layered finish. Very supple, lithe and delicious, this is not in the rich exuberant style but much more refined and classical. It will age magnificently, but also be approachable relatively early after release. Terrific wine indeed.

Galloni om: Chateau L'If Grand Cru

The 2023 L’If is unusually floral and refined for a wine that has, in the past, been darker and more ample in structure. Cedar, tobacco, crushed flowers and mint add lift and aromatic presence. Silky tannins create an impression of finesse. The 2023 represents the first year of vinification in the new cellar outfitted with cement vats. Overall, though, this wine feels like a new chapter for L'If. The vibrancy and energy here are palpable. Tasted two times.

Lisa Perrotti Brown om: Chateau L'If Grand Cru

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 L'If sashays out of the glass with flamboyant notes of kirsch, juicy plums, and mulberries followed by hints of rosebud tea, underbrush, dark chocolate, and aniseed. The medium to full-bodied palate is coated with red and black berry flavors, framed by firm fine-grained tannins and fantastic tension, finishing long and fragrant. This is beautiful! The blend is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.

Neal Martin om: Chateau L'If Grand Cru

The 2023 L'If was picked from September 18 to 27 for the Merlot. The Cabernet Franc was picked on October 2. The wine aged for 12 to 16 months in 50% new oak, the first time in the new cellar in concrete vats instead of stainless steel. It has quite an exuberant bouquet with ripe red cherry and wild strawberry fruit, a hint of blood orange and iris flower. It is very focused and beautifully defined, the limestone terroir percolating through. The palate is medium-bodied with the Cabernet Franc shaping the entry—a little peppery in style. The tannins are quite strict at the moment (which came as some surprise to the Thienponts), framing the dark berry and graphite-tinged fruit. Linear toward the finish, reflecting the slightly cooler growing season, this is a very fine, cerebral L'If.
