Heiner Lobenberg om:
Chateau Laroque Grand Cru Classe 2023

Flowers, crushed rocks, chocolate, smoke, orange rind, and spice create the complex set of aromatics. The palate is equally complex with its layers of lush, polished, sweet, pure, red fruits with their edge of sea-salt. Concentrated, vibrant, and elegant, there is depth and a slightly racy character providing length and complexity on the mid-palate, and in the finish. The wine was made with 99% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2028-2042.

Galloni om: Chateau Laroque Grand Cru Classe

The 2023 Laroque is classy, elegant and polished. A wine of total understatement and class, Laroque sizzles with all of the tension that is such a signature of the limestone parcels. In some recent vintages, Laroque has been more charming at the outset. The 2023, on the other hand, is a wine that is going to require a few years in bottle to be at its finest. Tasted two times.

Jane Anson om: Chateau Laroque Grand Cru Classe

Medium intensity ruby, this is a little reserved at first, in the best way, in that it has the hidden depths that are just so promising during En Primeur, real sense of sapidity, squid ink, violet reflections, extremely vibrant, really like this, blueberry, sage, slate, lift on the finish, delicious. Beaumartin family, David Suire winemaker.

Decanter om: Chateau Laroque Grand Cru Classe

Really perfumed nose, highly scented with purple flowers and dark ripe fruit - blackcurrant, damson plum and black cherry. Deep aromatics with lots of tobacco and clove spice on the nose. It’s heady, strongly scented and alive. Cool and crisp on the palate, smooth, so silky, really effortless in the tannin presentation. Juicy and clean, so bright, but not sour or tart, just the right side, so it’s lifted but not overly austere. Once the acidity calms down in comes the salty, mineral base giving lots of liquorice, wet stone and graphite tones, putting you squarely on limestone. Fruit is ripe and there is the softest chew to the expression but it keeps a relatively sleek frame. A bit minty. I would have thought there was more Cabernet in the blend than there is. It’s not so layered, but it’s certainly finessed and graceful on the palate with lots of precision and movement from start to finish. One that makes you want another sip straight away. 3.42pH. A great wine from winemaker David Suire. A yield of 46hl/ha. Ageing 50% new oak.

Colin Hay om: Chateau Laroque Grand Cru Classe

A vintage for the clay terroirs says David Suire. Limpid and glossy. White pepper. A little salinity and almost an iodine oyster shell element. Walnut oil, wisteria, raspberry, loganberry (above all), black cherry (but actually very little), blueberry and bramble. Blood orange (a marker of the parcel ‘les moulins’, just behind the chateau itself, apparently). Loganberry is the fruit marker that I hone in most of all. Rose petals and rose water. Very fine, very delicate and poised and very expressive of the cool slopes and plateau that together comprise its terroir. Mirror pool. The 2001 comparison again. Staggeringly pure and limpid, glossy and silky. On the palate the fruit is a shade lighter – pixilated raspberries and loganberries above all. Crystalline and fluid, lively and energetic. Very pure, focused and precise and more delicate than it sometimes is, if still very linear and long on the tapering finish. A natural acidity that accompanies the fruit throughout its journey from the attack all the way to the end. So glacially pure.

Suckling om: Chateau Laroque Grand Cru Classe

Aromas of currants, crushed stones, chalk and dried flowers. Medium-bodied with very fine tannins that are integrated and polished. Red currant, cherry and orange peel flavors with a salty undertone. It’s refined and beautiful, with finesse and complexity. 99% merlot and 1% cabernet franc. So drinkable now. Drink or hold.
