Heiner Lobenberg om:
Chateau Cheval Blanc 2023
/100
Forbliver meget fin. Mundindgangen er derefter utrolig elegant. Lidt støvet over røde kirsebær. Koncentreret finesse, må man sige.
The Wine Palate om: Chateau Cheval Blanc
The 2023 Cheval Blanc, accounting for 75% of this year’s crop, is deep garnet‑purple in color. It slowly unfurls to reveal notes of fresh blackberries and black raspberries, giving way to nuances of violets, camphor, pencil shavings, and garrigue with a touch of crushed rocks. The medium‑bodied palate is very tightly wound with impressive tension and gloriously ripe, fine‑grained tannins, offering layers of red and black berries with floral and mineral accents, finishing very long and graceful. Stunning. The blend is 52% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon, with pH 3.80.

Suckling om: Chateau Cheval Blanc
Blackberry and dark-chocolate aromas with bark, mushrooms, stems, flint, lead pencil and a hint of violets. Medium-bodied with a toned structure from the tight, compressed palate and fine, polished tannins. Extremely long. A blend of 52% merlot, 46% cabernet franc and 2% cabernet sauvignon. Best after 2029.

Jeff Leve om: Chateau Cheval Blanc
A riveting vintage of Cheval Blanc, balancing its opulent character with firm tannins and energy. In 2023, it is the Cabernet Franc that shines, with its pungent aromatic profile, opening with a bouquet of flowers, spices, mint, Cuban cigars, black and red fruits, cocoa, and a hint of orange peel. This is a slow-developing tasting experience: It takes time to get going, holding back some of its personality. On the palate, you experience its full length, purity, vibrance, elegance, and refinement, along with its tannins and energy, as the wine builds in intensity, lingers, expands, and captures your attention for nearly 60 seconds. The château believes it is better than the 2022; I do not agree (Although they are close), though I understand their perspective. The wine blends 52% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Decanter om: Chateau Cheval Blanc
Aromas of leather, black chocolate, mint and dark blackcurrant, herbal, amazing florality with violet and liquorice. Serious and classic, yet this is so juicy and already approachable, with supportive fine tannins giving weight and texture but no overt power. Pristine fruit, a touch cool but still ripe, and I love the slightly chalky edge, too. Absolutely incredible, with everything super-well integrated already, the oak not standing out: shows the art of blending. Very Cheval at its finest. Exceptional.

Parker om: Chateau Cheval Blanc
One of the most profound wines of the vintage is the 2023 Cheval Blanc, a striking wine that stands out for its strong sense of identity and seamless integration at such an early stage in its life. Wafting from the glass with notes of mulberries, lilac, dark fruits, iris root and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and seamless, with a gourmand core of cool, vibrant fruit that entirely conceals its sweet structuring tannins, concluding with a long, perfumed finish. It's a blend of 52% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon, drawing on fully 46 of the blocks that make up Cheval Blanc, and it attained 13.8% alcohol.

Colin Hay om: Chateau Cheval Blanc
(Saint Émilion; 52% Merlot; 46% Cabernet Franc; 2% Cabernet Sauvignon; 13.6% alcohol; tasted at Cheval Blanc with Pierre-Olivier Cloüet; whilst there was significant mildew pressure here, the generosity and evenness of the flowering permitted a final yield of 40 hl/ha, the source of the natural balance in the wine according to Pierre-Olivier). Gosh, this is fabulous. More cedar still than Petit Cheval. Very Cabernet Franc in its aromatics. Vertical, explosive aromatically, but gorgeous with it. When the cedar calms, it’s the graphite that sours and it seems to bring with it the fruit. Bramble, blueberry, blackberry, black cherry, damson, mulberry. A little blood orange. On the palate, this is so fantastic texturally. Silk layers unlike the more velvety Petit Chevel, but with even more depth, so we have a sort of incalculable milles feuilles sensation. Just gorgeous texturally. A cascade of layers like the descent of a spiral staircase into the cool dark depths of the cave below. So Gracious and complete. Staggering in its mouth feel. Chocolate. Violet and lavender. Aniseed. Black peppercorns and that cool finish of Szechuan peppercorns and a touch of menthol. Incredibly ethereal and fantastically lifted on the (two minute plus) finish. Utterly brilliant and a complete triumph.

Tim Atkin om: Chateau Cheval Blanc
Tight spicy oak aromas with clove and cinnamon as well as a dusting of cocoa powder and ground coffee. Underneath the black fruit is deep and complex with plenty of liquorice and sweet blue berries and fresh redcurrant and raspberry acidity. Lush and palate coating with multi-layered complexity and depth. On the finish the sanguine piquancy and graphite minerals are in harmony with the ripe black fruit. Very long and truly classic and fine. This will live for decades and need at least ten years to reveal its likely-hidden depths on release. A magnificent Cheval Blanc this year.

Jane Anson om: Chateau Cheval Blanc
Contrasts intensity and depth with nuance and softly spoken character. Lift and tension, precisely placed cocoa bean, liqourice root, tomato leaf, tannins, violet and peony florals and slate, sinewy, slow-tug tannins, powerful with lift off. Has plenty to say and demands that you slow down to hear it. 40hl/h yield, 75% of overall production (no press wine as ever), harvest September 6 to October 3. Pierre-Olivier Clouet director.

Galloni om: Chateau Cheval Blanc
The 2023 Cheval Blanc is stellar, just as it was en primeur. Lithe and elegant, the 2023 is super impressive right out of the gate. It possesses superb textural density yet remains so elegant, so precise. Exotic floral and spice notes weave through a core of red/purplish fruit. Hints of lavender, rose petal and menthol follow, adding myriad layers of dimension. The 2023 is wonderfully vivid, even in the early going. It's a magnificent young Cheval Blanc that will provide many decades of exceptional drinking. Yields were 39 hectoliters per hectare, the highest since 2004.

Jeb Dunnuck om: Chateau Cheval Blanc
A blend of 52% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon raised just about all in new barrels, with a tiny amount in once-used barrels and foudre (roughly 10% of the blend), the 2023 Château Cheval Blanc is an absolutely quintessential Cheval Blanc that's all about complexity, finesse, and elegance. Blackcurrants, mulberries, graphite, spicy wood, smoke, and crushed stone-driven aromatics slowly pick up a kiss of violets and flowers with time in the glass. It's beautifully textured, medium to full-bodied, and flawlessly balanced, with ripe, polished tannins and a gorgeous finish. It's possibly in the same family as the 2019 and is going to shine with 5-7 years of bottle age and evolve for 30+ years on its balance and overall harmony. There are roughly 10,683 cases produced. Drink 2031-2055.
