Lobenberg: Rangen de Thann Clos Saint Urbain Grand Cru, ein Name wie Donnerhall. Dafür steht Zind Humbrecht! Vulkanische Böden in Südexposition. Eine sehr erhabene, zitrusexpressive Nase, sehr straight, sehr fein, sehr steinig für Elsässer Verhältnisse, fast schwebend leicht wirkend. Auch Anklänge von Mango, Passionsfrucht, getrocknete Aprikosen, superreifer Pfirsich, reife Orange. Durchaus leicht exotisch aber nicht schwülstig, eher versammelt und zum Reinspringen lecker. Smaragd Dürnsteiner Kellerberg aus der Wachau, aber sauberer, weniger barock, und mehr durchscheinende Mineralität. Am Gaumen ultrafein, fast zart wirkend, aromatisch eher zitrisch, Quitte, Limetten, völlig ohne Schwere, enorm geschliffen aber mit rassiger Säurespur. Große Länge und intensiv kreidiger Nachhall. Auch hier wieder fern vom Barock. Wunderbar saftig, das ist ein ungemein tolles Mundgefühl, mild und doch sehr spannungsgeladen und mineralisch! 98-99+/100

-- Suckling: A unique dry riesling with an astonishing combination of mini banana, mirabelle, baking spice and sea salt. Super concentrated and super elegant, this has a level of poise that’s very rare in the 2018 vintage. I love the way the silky finish caresses the palate. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. 97/100

-- Wine Enthusiast: nitial whiffs of flint, apple and smoke dissipate, leaving this wine with a shy, closed nose. The palate still carries residual carbon dioxide that gives a little spritz but all that is just window dressing for a powerful and concentrated core. Yes, there is concentrated lemon, both peel and pith, but a stony expanse underneath makes this profound, smoky and compelling. The finish is bone dry, bracing and racy. Lemon echoes long, carrying stony heat in its cooling breeze. 97/100

-- Parker: From vines averaging 56 years of age cultivated on sedimentary volcanic rocks, the 2018 Riesling Rangen de Thann Clos Saint Urbain offers a spectacularly deep, intense and smoky, iodine-like nose of crushed stones, yeasty notes and warm, ripe Riesling fruit. On the palate, this is an enormously rich, refined and saline dry Riesling with very fine tannins and a sustainably saline and vital finish that lingers and lingers and doesn't make your palate tired. There is great and stimulating astringency and grip on the finish that makes this one of the most fascinating and saline Rangen I have had so far. It's definitely one of the world's greatest Rieslings. Go for it! Bottled in January 2020 with 13.4% alcohol and a natural cork. Tasted in January 2023. 97/100
