Alle Krug-basisvine gæres i meget gamle, helt neutrale Champenois-barriques, som de derefter ligger på i ca. tre måneder. Det handler om oxidering, aldrig om træsmag. De overføres derefter parcel for parcel til små beholdere af rustfrit stål til yderligere lagring. Sen frigivelse i vinteren 2023 fra vingårdens skatkammer, perfekt opbevaring. Champagnen blev degorgeret i 2012, så den kom på markedet første gang i 2013 og så igen 10 år senere. Jeg smagte den igen i 2024, og med denne perfekte modenhed er en Krug Vintage svær at slå, når det gælder længde og kompleksitet i Champagne. Næsen er røget og meget kompakt, har stadig brug for lidt luft, så kvæde, jod, masser af grafit, pumpernikkel. I munden har den stadig en vis spændstighed, selv om den er umådelig rig og overdådig. Man tror næsten, at man har en stor Meursault fra 1990'erne i munden, ristede nødder, igen masser af jod og sort te. Den varme sommer i år 2000 gav denne champagne en vanvittig stoflighed. En hummer thermidor er lige præcis nok til denne store, store champagne. Den er mindre citrusagtig end normalt for Krug, men mere struktureret, med så meget tryk, cremethed og en underliggende fin jodmineralitet, der giver en utrolig længde. Den har alt, hvad man kan forvente af en stor champagne, og den viser det. Et mesterværk af præcision og intensitet. Selv om den er relativt drikkeklar, kan den godt ligge i kælderen et par år endnu, den har så meget substans, helt vildt.

Very fragrant. This has developed bright, ripe red cherry fruit aromas, vanilla cream, sweet roasted almond biscuits, some marzipan, tobacco, lemon meringue and chalky minerals. The palate has an assertive core of fine acidity with more yellow fruits expressed on entry, like peaches and nectarines. Good ripeness, superfine acidity. The redder fruits build as it goes; cherries and raspberries, yellow plums to close. Full of life. Drink now or up to 20 years, it will go the distance. 98/100

A powerhouse, with a dense and expressive core of toasted brioche, candied kumquat, espresso crème, crystallized honey and salted pistachio flavors. The fine, creamy mousse and well-meshed acidity lend a sense of finesse that cloaks the firm structure and exuberance of this impressive Champagne. Disgorged spring 2010. The Krug vintage 2000 Brut smells strikingly redolent of sea breeze, kelp, and piles of oyster and mussel shells, allied to lemon oil and toasted hazelnuts. On the palate, the aforementioned elements serve for compulsive salivation, while a lusciously juicy amalgam of lime, grapefruit and apple tinged with piquancy of their pips buoys the salty wave of mineral matter into a profoundly protracted finish that bursts with brightness and at the same time reveals mouthwateringly savory crab shell reduction and a hitherto largely hidden dark side of smoky Latakia tobacco, dark-roasted coffee, and toasted grains. Expect this to merit following for 12-15 years. 95/100

Brioche, dried pear, smoke, almonds, chamomile and wild herbs are all laced together in Krug's 2000 Vintage. A wine of striking depth and resonance, the 2000 is absolutely gorgeous today. The first signs of very early tertiary complexity have begun to appear while the acidity is softening, both of which make the 2000 delicious today. At the same time, there is no hurry. I imagine the 2000 will still be gorgeous 20 years from now. Slight elements of reduction linger on the close. The blend is 43% Chardonnay, 42% Pinot Noir and 15% Pinot Meunier, a rare vintage in which Chardonnay is quite high. 95/100

Tasted blind. Mid greenish straw. Rather similar nose to the third sample of the 2002. Light and fresh on the nose. Intense tropical-flower nose. Strong and floral and exotic. Emphatic. Relatively mellow. Long undertow. Builds to a beautiful conclusion. Quite sweet start. 19/20

Krug Champagne står for regionens kvalitetsspydspids som næppe noget andet hus. Rent håndlavet, meget små mængder, altid ekstremt sjældne. Denne anerkendte, boutique-lignende fabrik i Reims producerer helt fantastiske ting.
